Thorpe ..travellers & hawkers
« on: Friday 03 February 06 20:05 GMT (UK) »

tracing the Thorpe family..travellers & hawkers.
in 1861 family were in 2 caravans at the  " SPREAD EAGLE  " yard , presumably a pub , Buckden , Hunts, but then seem to be based at the
" CROWN INN " St.Ives, Cambs thro unitl 1901.
Their names were quite distinctive.

Hi Cuxwold

Perhaps this is of interest Huh

"The Reading Standard" 19 Aug 1898

Sylvester THORPE and John HARRIS, Gypsies, were married at Kings Lynn this week.  A Gypsy named "Prince" and his wife were best man and bridesmaid.  The two couples arrived at church in the same cab.  The bride was wearing a gorgeous dress of maroon plush with an immense hat covered with waving feathers whilst he bridesmaid wore a costume of golden plush.  The groom and best man were dressed in velvet with vermillion neck ties.  On leaving the church, a piano organ, hired for the occasion, played dance music and the party enjoyed a lively waltz in the street.  Revels and feastings went on for two days by a party of 50 Gypsies who, it is said, presented the bride with a pint pot containing a substantial sum of money.  The young married couple are spending their honeymoon in a caravan which was especially built at a cost of £150.

I found it in an 1898 Kentish newspaper but it might be more worthwhile to try and get a copy from the "Reading Standard" just in case there was a bit more http://www.readinglibraries.org.uk/services/local.htm

Donna,
The reference to James Thorpe / Eliza Buttress was via the Family Search IGI site.
I found a reference to an Eliza Thorpe bn 1849 at Foxton Cambs . Her parents were the aforementioned James / Eliza .( igi batch no C138132)
Ialso found another daughter Lucy bn 1849, but this may be the Holland Thorpe that married Edward Frankland.
From yourself I got the name of Ambrose's wife as Draper..but I cannot find any corroboration either on the Freebmd or Family Search of their marriage.
All the other details I took from the 1861 census..and there the names are all Thorpe.
Where did you find the birth details for Ambrose ?
