1881/1891 census Charles M. CHILD b. Hants
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 17:19 GMT (UK) »

In 1871 - Charles M CHILD (aged 23) was living at home with dad in Upper Clatford, Hants (dad = Rev Thomas Child, Rector of Upper Clatford & Rural Dean)
Charles is listed as Attorney and Solicitor. But I can't  find him after that!  Angry Can someone see him in 1881/91?
He was born in Appleshaw, Hants.

hI Annmarie.....right i have followed this charle's family for so long now i feel like they're  are part of my tree....and you are right he is nowhere to be found. In the 81 Thomas has another two of his sons with him one of which is unmarried at 34. There are grandaughters Grace and Isobel but they belong to Alfred and his wife Catherine.Elizabeth Fielder is the sister of Thomas's wife  Catherines  sister, Emily Edwards  is also visiting the house at that time. But at the same time over in  Appleshaw there are three more Child children staying in the house of Charles Edwards (farmer). Gerald 10,Mabel 11, and Ethel 6 visitingalong with Eliza Paice who was always the Governess in the Edwards Household. I tried to find if these children could belong to Charles and started tracking backwards. Then i made a discovery. In 1851 Thomas was already a widower. He had a son Richard 8,a son Thomas 7 and a daughter Mary age 1.Elizabeth Fielder his wifes sister was living with him and the children. But as you already statded Charles was 23ish so  born in approx 1848 making him three in 51. The son Alfred shows up as 41 in the 1881 so born about 1840 making him 11 and Edward in the 81 says 34 making him born about 1847 so would be about 4 in the 51. I wonder why these  three children were not at home with him and the others. It seems strange.  I can see lots of Charles Childs in 51 with the right birth dates but belonging to other families from different areas. Do you have the birth cert for your Charles with Thomas as father? I will keep looking but that is a possibility of why you cant find him.  He may have been taken in by Thomas. Just a thought....stranger things have happened.

anyway i will keep looking very best wishes cheryle.f

Gosh what a lot of chat about Charles!  How come you have been so busy with Charles, Cheryle?
To put things into perspective:
Thomas Child of Hurstbourne Tarrant married Mary Fielder of Newbury, Berks.
Children (I think this is all of them:
Alfred 1840 His daughter Isabel married Richard's son Thomas. (Some of) the other children were Agatha, Ethel, Mabel & Gerald. Alfred followed his father Thomas into the church - both were Rector of Upper Clatford at one time.
Richard 1842-29 apr 1923 (My ancestor) was married twice. First time round he married Mary Louisa Dampier granddaughter of Rev Frowd (rector of Upper Clatford!) and had 9 children. They combined their surnames and Richard went through life as Richard Dampier-Child after that. In his late 40's he took a liking to the nursemaid - Mary Ann Austridge and he divorced and married her.(4 children)
Thomas Hall 1843 Married an Alice Unknown and his son Thomas George married another of Richard's children, Lucy
Edward 1846 Seems not to have married and was ... wait for it!.... Curate of Upper Clatford
Charles Morgan 1848 So poor Charlie died young (sob)
Mary Ann 1850 Don't know anything about Mary.

I wonder where Hall & Morgan come from?

Grin Yeah I know....strange isnt when other people are poking around in your past.....especially when it's of no relevence to them at all....the problem was  i started so i just had to finish, you know how it is. I thought it was about half nine then looked up and saw it was gone midnight. It was interesting following though, the connection between the Edwards family and the Childs over such along period of time.
When i couldnt find Charles come hell or high water after the 71 i should have gone straight back to the start and checked for a death first....instead of going the other way and trying to find what could be his children. Anyway Tricia saved the day Grin again, and I turned off my computer ...very happy that i had"nt sent you off on a wild goose chase!

I will keep a look out for Mary Ann for you though on my  travels.

                        best wishes cheryle

Thanks Cheryle,
Mary Fielder Child sounds like a definate possibily!  I went walk about on the web last night and found that Hurstbourne Tarrant  seems to have been their home for centuries. There are two 13th century strained glass windows in St Peter's church , Hurstbourne Tarrant dedicated to the memory of William and Sarah CHILD and another for Robert and Sarah Ann CHILD. Also a pew about 1500 for the CHILD family.
Trying to turn up family for Thomas CHILD (abt 1807) now. There is an Thomas (abt 1832) & Edwin (abt 1843) and then 4 siblings who ran a farm and are all unmarried. I wonder if they are actually 6 brothers and sisters and all Nephews and nieces of Thomas Child 1807?
I think a should have been a private-eye I would have enjoyed that! Wink

Forgot to tell you I have a copy of Thomas CHILD and Mary FIELDER s marriage cert. Mary's father was a John FIELDER and the witnesses were Clara, Grove & George FIELDER.
I know they are not your lot but I thought I'd post that in case at some future time some distant rellie is looking for it!
