Looking for Norie/Norrie - Dunn in Fintry
« on: Monday 06 February 06 03:57 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone have a Norie or Norrie family in their tree?

Alexander Norie/Norrie married Margaret Mair abt 1760 in Fintry.

According to IGI their children were:

Alexander (1762)
John (1764)
James (1766)
David (1770)
William (1774)

James married Ann Neilsen/Neilson in 1787 in either Killearn or Fintry and their children were (IGI again)

John born abt 1788
Martha abt 1791

Martha married William Dunn in 1822.  I have heard of something called handfast (where it was a promise of marriage and then when a priest visited the village the marriage would be formalised - or is this just a myth) because my gggrandmother Jean Dick Dunn was born abt 1819 and on her death certificate on scotlandspeople, Martha and William were both listed.  Other children were:

James Dunn (1822)
John Dunn (1828)
Ann Dunn (1831)

Hi Vivsontag

I don't have a Norie/Norie in Fintry,  :'(but I do have Duns or Din/Dun.
I have a William Dun married to a Margret McNab in 1763 in Fintry.  They had at least 9 children, possibly 11.

Could there be any relation with your Duns?

Haven't got back to 1760s yet Maple, but quite possibly there could be a connection.

My William Dunn was a painter and born abt 1790.   I understand there are a lot of Dunns in the Fintry area, but would be happy to swop info and over time we will see if we can make a connection.

Regards

Hi Vivsontag

There were a lot of Dins/Duns in Fintry in the 1700's, but between 1750 and 1800 there were only 348 people living there. My earliest personal record for my family only goes back to the 1763 marriage of William Dun and Margret McNab. The OPR for this marriage just gives the posting of bans and the marriage date, not who the couples parents were. Embarrassed So I have hit a brick wall on this ancestral link. There first born son was named Alexander.

Fintry being such a small village, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that all the Duns were related to each other.

Good luck with your searching. Smiley

I'm loath to say no relative at this stage, as my knowlege of the Norries is very very sparse.  My interest is really a Martha Norrie and William Dunn, but whose to say this is not another branch.  Until I can, I'm a bit stuck.

I really appreciate your help on my behalf in Fintry, until I can really pinpoint the family or families I'm looking for its really a collection of information exercise.

Many thanks again

Dunn was often a later  version of Dun or indeed Din - you might find some leads at www.Dun.org.uk

Hi  Viv,
Only recently researched Norie in Fintry, the following are the oldest I've found in my own tree:
Alexander Norie & Margaret Moir or More, both c1730:
Children:
Alexander, 480/0020 0031, Fintry, 10/02/1762.
John, 480/0020 0035 Fintry, 10/06/1764.

William, 480/0020 0050, Fintry, 10/04/1774.

There are many descendants from this family. Hope this is of use to you.
                                                                 Regards,
                                                                           Dunmac.

P.S. Descent  from John & Jean Buchanan to John & Mary Smith to James & Elizabeth Brown etc.
