Hi Lesley
I don't think that the surname Callashaw or Calashaw is an Irish one I'm afraid.
Have you tried all the sites I have listed at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,83852.0.html
They may reveal some occurences of the surname in Ireland.
You say that the only occurence of the name you can find is in the 1901 census - just to be clear for others reading this post, you are not suggesting this is the same Mary Calashaw you refer to as your great grandfather's mother.
Best wishes

Incidentally, I've checked the image of the 1901 census and I'm sure the surname actually reads "Callaghan".
Is it possible the name of your great grandfather's mother is similarly mistranscribed - i.e. was she a Callaghan (which is definitely Irish!)?

Hi Lesley
I think you should just keep Callaghan in mind as one possibility. Names on any source can be incorrect in my experience.
You say that the story is that he (your great grandfather Charles) took his mother's maiden name. Do you mean that Mary's maiden name was Callashaw (or whatever) and Charles became Charles Callashaw. Or was that Mary's married name?

Hi
I have the marriage certificate of my Great Grandfather his mothers name was Mary Calashaw. I have tried for several years to find anyone else with that surname the only thing I can find is on the 1901 census
Mary ann callashaw brn abt 1892 rochdale stepdaughter Patrick Callashaw brn abt 1889 rochdale stepson
They are living in Rochdale Lancashire with:
Leonard Thompson brn abt 1896 rochdale Son
Lillian Thompson brn abt 1893 rochdale daughter
Mary thompson brn abt 1856 Wife sligo ireland
William Thompson brn abt 1844 Kilkenny ireland
I dont't think this particular family has anything to do with me.
what I was wondering was is the Surname Callashaw Irish???
I just don't know where to look any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Lesley
Would Mary and Patrick be the children of Mary Thompson and Step children of William? Was she married Twice? maybe she was Divorced from Geogre Walton and it was she who gave the children her maiden name?

Maybe she never married the father William Walton so the children always had their mothers maiden name?

My brother Frank Hanley used to work for the City of Rochdale. He lives there. Look him up in the phone directory. Tell him ya found out this info from the forum, let him guess that it was me, his brother who gave ya this tip.
He may be able to steer ya in the right direction of navigating how the City of Rochdale is organized when it comes to registering folk. I can't promise ya he knows a whole lot, but he's a good source to begin with,
