My Grandfathers, Grandfather a John Hobbs was the agent sent out by the New Zealand Company to see if the country was worth settling in 1823. He actually thought it was too nice to colonize and spoil and went back had a dream and become a Missionary.

This will tell you all about it as my version being a family one handed down is rather biased.

Where do you live and what do you specifically want to find out and why as that will govern the type of information I give you.
Do you still have family in New Zealand?
No I don't think I often get it wrong even if thinking on the run often means you cannot always check facts for accuracy. Because of issues that came up early days and the flow on effects to my family and others. Often information provided by historians working for the government is sanitized and sounds acceptable. All my grandfathers, grandfathers and other relatives connected to the Missions and the New Zealand Company, information like work and personal diaries and papers are archived at museums where they have been donated and other storage places a copy of all the day to day running of the country and the church had to be sent to Australia to the Company in London to the head of the Missionary society 4 copies hand written each day. I have read numerous diaries and the information contained is very enlightening also stories pass down in families. Briefly set up by Banks, Insurance Companies, Real Estate, and speculators who were involved in other such ventures in overseas colonies. Key word MONEY. I imagine the GRO in London still have their records available to be looked at. Cheers Heather

New Zealand then:
It was/is owned by the Maori's and it was not until a treaty was organized that it become a Crown Colony. With certain proviso's. 1840 to 1852 was when the main bulk of people arrived here, after this time their was rule changes for settlement as the situation became complicated.
Prices quoted were different in all areas. I have government statistics from 1826 to 1937 to back all the information I can give you.
Their was no government at the time it was first colonized the country was given help and direction from New South Wales and London eventually a Governor was appointed as the Queens representative to deal with most matters but all decisions had to be approved from overseas a long and complicated and frustrating process.
Their was various uprisings by the natives who considered their treatment was unjust and unfair A war was fought in the 1860's and the Maori's won.
I am not quite sure who made the original posting but if you contact me I will give you details specific to the area that your family came to or lived in.
Cheers Heather
