by My Daughter. Chatting to find her Roots !
|
As these questions keep cropping up, I have collected tips from Kazza, Grandad James, Mickey, myself and others, and put them all here together.
If anything here doesn't work, because it is not clear, say so, and I will edit it !
Between us all on RootsChat, we should be able to write a "recipe" that everyone can follow !
Good Luck !
First of all, what can you load to RootsChat: WARNING, please note: Allowed file types: txt, jpg, jpeg, gif, pdf, mpg, png, ged. Maximum attachment size allowed: 500 KB
Secondly, what does file size mean:
..... forget completely about the physical size of the picture you are using. it doesn't matter in the least wether it is 2"x1" or 6"x8", what really matters is the pixel size ----- [if you] resize your picture to 130x200 pixels and no matter how many inches it is, the size on your screen will be 130x200 pixels which is what you really want Denn
and the size of the image file will be given in KB (kilobytes)
1) Resizing and cropping your image file:
your pictures probably have names ending with .BMP (BitMaP Format), .GIF (Graphic Interface Format) or .JPG (Joint Photographic Group)
To change the size and format you need a graphics program. The easiest, for this sort of stuff, is IrfanView, which is FREE and you can download from: http://www.irfanview.com/ (==> TIP: While you're at it, download the plug-ins as well. One of them is for Djvú, which is handy for looking at GRO images !) (ps. Mac-Users: Sorry, but I have no experience with a Mac, so I can't offer any advice for it)
- Load the image into IrfanView
- you may only want part of the image; in this case hold down the left mouse button and draw a box around the part of the image you need. Adjust the size of the box to get it exactly right i.e. hover with the cursor over a box-line, the cursor will change shape to a double-headed arrow, hold the left mouse button down and move the box-line to where you want it. Once you have it exactly how you want it, click on "edit" and "crop selection"

- in the menu "Image", click on "Resize"
- change the size. The width/height ratio will stay the same, unless you deliberately change it. The RootsChat board, excluding profile info and sidebars, is about 800 pixels wide (on a laptop), so try and stay within this limit, otherwise the screen will be "stretched" and we have to scroll left and right to read the postings. - use "Save as ... " to store the new picture, otherwise the old picture just gets written back.
When saving, if your image was .BMP, change the file type to .JPG ! (far less bytes !) Just in case, when saving, name your picture file without blanks i.e. "my-picture", not "my picture" (RootsChat uses a Linux Server which has different rules)
2) Adding an image to a posting:
(a) As an attatchment.
Take a deep breath..............
In the Post reply window, underneath the bit I am typing this in, there is an arrow, and Additional options.
Click on additional options, and in the top attach box, browse to the file name. Select it, and it should appear in the box, then press post.
Next cross all fingers, say a prayer and tap your head 3 times saying, I can do it, I can do it.............
p.s. I use a german operating system: Durchsuchen means "Search" or "Browse"
(b) Within the text.
i.e. like this: (No, it's not just you, it gets me like that, too !)
I have written [ img] and [ /img] for the tags, as RootsChat-Software won't print it otherwise. When typing them, remove the blank after the [ !
Warning: this only works for images that are on the internet !
- enter [ img][ /img] where you want to insert your pic. (or click on the button above - Add BBC Tags, 2nd. row, 4th. from the left)
 - place cursor between the brackets ][ - Paste in the URL or: - Paste in the URL - Add [ img] before the URL - Add[ /img] after the URL or: - Paste in the URL - highlight the URL with the cursor - click on the BBC Image tag (see above)
the line should then look like this
[img]http://www.this-is-my-url.xyz[/img]
Click on "preview", the image should appear !

Berlin Bob: Fittygen very kindly added screenshots to illustrate this topic.
This is a screenshot version of Bobs "Adding Images" Sometimes it helps if you can see what you are doing. Unfortunately, (2.12.2005) the screenshots all vanished. As the text alone doesn't make any sense, I have "borrowed" the space, to expand the original thread, this time, with screenshots. (Thanks, Fittygen, for the idea, and if you see this, I hope you wont mind, that I've used your space)
3) Adding a crest/image to a profile:
It makes sense to to have the image on RootsChat, rather than an external source, so that it is always available, even when the external source is offline.
3a) Image on RootsChat:
- download the image from the external site to your computer, Follow tip 2) to load the image to RootsChat (e.g. to a reply to this topic) then, right click on the image in RootsChat, click on Properties and mark and copy the RootsChat-URL you find there. Go to your profile info. click on "I have my own family crest or image:" Paste the copied URL here.

3b) Image from external site:
If the external site has tagged the URL, then remove the tags (either <img> and </img> or the same with [] brackets) (RootsChat sometimes adds an "http://" automatically. Make sure this sequence only appears once !
Don't forget you have to log off and back on to get the crest change to load up,
A good size for a profile crest/image is 100-120 pixels wide. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that there is a limit, so if your crest does't load, and is wider than 120 pixels, try resizing it to 120 pixels (see 1), above) and try again !
3c) Image from your Computer:
Click on I will upload my own picture: in your profile, and find your image

Some RootsChatters have problems with this one; if you do, too, then try method 3a), that seems to be the easiest way.
4) Adding an image to the signature:
Basicaly, the same as tip 3) but in copy into "Research names and Areas:"

General:
- Whichever you are trying to do, don't forget this bit .....

- If you have copied an URL from another site, you may need to add or delete the img-tags, according to where you are adding, i.e. tags needed for images in postings and signature, no tags needed for crests (see above). On some sites the tags will be <img> and </img> (standard HTML). On RootsChat the tags need to be enclosed in [ and ]
- If you have scanned an image using a scanner (probably 300 dpi = dots/pixels per inch) and want to print it, then you need to size it down to about a quarter (printer = 75 dpi)

I would like to add smilies to the bottom of my posts, but you say that they come off the web and have an address at the side (per your illustration).
In my case, I downloaded a whole programe called Smiley Central which is now on my Outlook Express toolbar and Internet Explorer toolbar
I tried to copy and paste in Rootschat, but this obviously doesn't work.

Looking into Holes
|
Joe,
Are you using Internet Explorer? If you are:
1. put your mouse pointer over the picture you are interested in and click the right button
2. a box comes up, and the bottom you should see Properties. Select that,
3. and in the box that comes up you will see Address, and that is the site and name of the picture.
Hope that helps,
Kazza.

Here is another possibility, but this only works for external images i.e. images that are not stored on RootsChat:
Right-Mouse-Click on the image Left click on "Save image as ..." (or something similar - I have a german operating system here !) Save the image where you want it.
For RootsChat images, the suggested name is index.php, which is how you know, that this method won't work !
So then you have to look for an external source ....
Good luck !

My great grandparents Basil & Sarah Sealey
|
I've been trying and trying to add images to my posts in order to get some help deciphering handwriting.
So far I have followed the instructions carefully and always failed. I've tried 2 approaches to getting the image, which is in a .jpg file of less than 300K on my hard drive.
If I try to include the path between the [ img] [/img] tags (reversing the \ as suggested), the system introduces the string http:// and the file does not appear on a preview
On the other hand, whenever I've tried to attach the file to the end of the post, my session has crashed. On the assumption that this might be an Internet Explorer problem, I'm now attempting it using a different version of Internet Explorer on a different machine. If some horrible writing appears below that will have worked, (but I'm still puzzled about the include bit). If not I'm giving up Postscript - Actually I'm not giving up because it posted, but was huge so I've removed it. Thank you Pauline for the tip

Sorry Roger !
An URL can also be a file name !!
I have edited the original posting to read " .... URL (or File name) ... "
Hope that is now clearer for everbody.
Roger, you may find using an attatchment is better, as your file name is local to your computer. Have another go, and if it doesn't work, ask again
PS. I stumbled on this, just after: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,35145.0.html and found an answer. Is this the same problem you are describing here ?

hi Berlin-Bob, I just came across your tutorial on posting images. I had done a similar tut in technical help forum. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,31111.msg137036.html#msg137036
Yours is much more detailed so I will put a link from mine to this one.
