Thanks to a very prompt reply here earlier I have now located a JOHN EDWARD WOOD born 28th June 1885.

His mother was called Ellen Wood and in 1916 they lived at 144 Ontario Street, Kingston, Ontario.

How would I go about finding census records for them.

Canadian census records currently available online in full (images) are 1901 and 1911.  1901 is pretty much fully-indexed at www.automatedgenealogy.com, 1911 is partially done there and also other places, I find if you search for 'placename' 1911 census it will come up if it's available.

1901 census, from automatedgenealogy, shows a John Wood b. 28 Jun 1886 with a mother Ellen in the Frontenac area, which is where Kingston is - no other John Wood in this area:

District:   ON FRONTENAC (#61)
Subdistrict:     Portsmouth (Village) E Page 13

(obviously more info on the actual census image, inc. full dates etc.)

As far as I can see nobody's indexed the Kingston records for 1911 yet, but the images are still there if you're feeling patient!
