I have found that some relatives arrived in Lyttleton in 1865.I believe both parents died in 1877 but had 4 surviving children that went over to NZ with them. I would like to find the deaths of the parents and then what happened to the children after they grew up, (marriage, Baptisms etc).
I have worked out that Lyttleton is next to Christchurch and looked at the links listed on this board to no avail. Is there an equivalent to freeBMD or census available online? If not where do I go from here? The people in question are:
Ship Greyhound 1410 tons Sailed London 21 Jan 1865 arrived Lyttleton 7 May 1865
Edward Foster 45 Mary 44 Albert 18 Ann 15 Anna 13 John 4
They lived in Nottinghamshire, England, before emigration.
I have been researching the family for 2 years and am well versed in UK research but have no experience in researching abroad. Any ideas on how to proceed will be much apprieciated.
There are no NZ freeBMD on line and the census in New Zealand has never been made open to the public however NZ does have some excellent researches and this one may help you find some of the people you are looking for on this NZ online database

Thanks to all of you for the information. I think the probate will of Edward Foster 1877 at the Christchurch archives is mine as I do know that he died in 1877. As he arrived in Lyttelton in 1865 I would think he remained around the Christchurch area. The rest also sound interesting.
