London Burials - a Rough Guide

It is notoriously difficult to find the place of burials for those who lived in London, so I’ve put together a ‘very rough guide’ of online resources for research purposes.  A brief background and guide to archival holdings is here http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/pdfs/burial_records.pdf

There are a few things worth bearing in mind:

1)   In such a metropolis people were not always buried in their ‘local’ cemetery, and there were often ‘arrangements’ between specific burial grounds to bury those from certain geographical areas.  There were also similar arrangements between certain London parishes/hospitals/workhouses/societies and cemeteries – as an example see Brookwood Cemetery in Woking Surrey http://www.tbcs.org.uk/parishes.htm

2)   Many cemeteries have been destroyed either through redevelopment and bombing during WW2 and for those that do remain many have been neglected and the gravestones have been degraded by pollution and general age – the state of those which remain often depend on the quality of the materials used.  See http://www.derelictlondon.com/cemetery.htm for some contemporary photos.

3)   Common graves were non unusual especially for the less well-off and plague pits in earlier days were part of the fabric of London life.

4)   Burial Indexes and archives such as the National Archives and City of London Archives are not covered here but are of course integral to the research.

Having said that here are some useful online resources some with searchable databases:

London Burials
www.londonburials.co.uk
A good site with a map which indicates burial grounds by geographic region with notes about periods of use.

London Cemeteries

http://www.londoncemeteries.co.uk/?page=holmes
Partial transcription of a seminal work on London Cemeteries, includes a list of churches and chapels with vaults as opposed to cemetery grounds.

Victorian London Cemeteries

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/cem.html
A useful site listing cemeteries in large geographic areas of the city, also includes faith/cultural specific cemeteries.

London Jewish Cemeteries

http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/brit/london.html
A list with explanatory notes and contact details for further information.

Brookwood Military Cemeteries

http://www.tbcs.org.uk/military.htm
Near Woking Surrey this was once one largest cemeteries in the world with Military graves from WW1 and WW2 – some online military burials of those from Australia and the United States, mostly WW1.

Military/War Death Burials

Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a search by Cemetery facility (mostly WW1) http://tinyurl.com/bbtbp

What a lot of work you have done Biker, again some of my family are somewhere in London. On recent visit to London I managed to pick up a book from Waterstones. Its part of the Metro Guides called London's Cemeteries a very handy pocket sized book. Anyone interested then try the web site www.metropublications.com
