James Tatham on 51 Census - HELP!!!!
« on: Saturday 11 February 06 18:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Can any one have a look for a James Tatham on the 1851 Census, but unfortunately I do not know which county he will be in !!!

He is a bit of a 'black sheep' in my family. On the 1851 Census his wife is in Bewdley, Worcester, but where he is, God Knows.

On his daughters marriage certificate, he is a Gunner, so he may just be in the army on the 1851 Census.

His wife was born in 1816, so that is the age James may be, and as for where he is born, it could be anywear in the world.

I know this will be a bit of a 'Task', but thanks in advance to any one who attempts to help me out.

Thanks again, Tippin

Hi Tippin...I like a mystery but i dont like this one Roll Eyes It does'nt look like it's gonna have an end!!!!I have tried James in every variation,James up to 10 years older and 10 years younger than his wife,Tatham in every variation etc. and now i'm going mad Tongue Have you found hm the 61? And is he definately the father of the youngest daughter Louisa in the 51? Is that the daughters marriage details you have. Any other clues lurkng about in the 'blacksheep bit'. I will keep looking but have you got anything else to go on.  Sometimes the bits that seem irrelevant are the little keys that open the big boxes....if you know what i mean  Grin.

                 best wishes cheryle.

I do think that James was Louisa's farther. Louisa and my ancester Rosannah, were both christend in Ribsford, Worcester, and both have there farther as James Thomas.

Also, on Ellen's death certificate in 1856, it says that she is the wife of James Tatham, so he should still be alive in 1856. As for in 1861, Rosannah ends up as a servant girl, and Louisa in the workhouse, I have found no sign of James in any of the census.

Thanks for trying, Tippin

Hi again Tippin....i have a feeling theres got to have been more than those two children. They married in 1832 and Louisa was only born  in 1850. I havent seen in any other circumstances like that, that there were'nt children from earlier in the marriage. I'm still poking around Wink

Maybe you could ask for a Claines (where marriage took place)Worcs look up for the 41 and see if there were any other children or a birthplace for James on details.

Smiley This is all i could find.....

       Claines... Worcestershire    22  October 1832

James Thomas  Tatham and Ellen Turley
So looks like Ellen was only 16 when she married

I had  a look around to see if any Turleys(maybe her mum and dad) living in Claines in 1851 but only found this one. 1851 Claines DISTRICT 10C

HO107/2046   Geo Turley  16  House Serv Unm  bBradford Worcs  (Maybe brother or cousin of Ellen)

Then also in 1851 living Oldbury Worcs....

Edward Tatham   17   b Martley  Worcs  Servant

This young man could be  James and Ellen's son, as was born in 1834 but also shows there were Tathams living in Martley in 1830's so even if he is a is a brother of James, might just give you another bit of info, to ask for a Parish baptisim look up for the Martley area for Tatham births.

           best wishes cheryle

Thanks very much for the help. It has realy kick started my search for the Tathams. I had got to the point when I was starting to believe that James Tatham did not even exist.

Thanks again, Tippin

Grin Grin Grin Grin Well do you think this could be Louisa all grown up and married?

  Worcestershire 1881 RG 11/2899 Folio 12 page 18

Hall Street Court No 1 Kidderminster Bourough

Thomas Birch  Head 31 Gen lab Belbroughton Worcs
Louisa Birch wife 30 Rug Weaver  Bewdley Worcs
Joseph Tatham 13 Wallsall Staffordshire
Ellen Tatham 7 Kidderminster Worcs
Sarah Jane Birch 7 months Kidderminster

There is a clue i suppose in the name of the daughter she had before she married Birch Wink

If it is her its nice to see that sometimes there was another  life with a happy ending after the workhouse.(my mums was one of them)

         best wishes cheryle.f

i'm going  to have another scout around as the name of the son(joseph) rings a bell as well. When i was looking through  for James last night i am sure that i saw a Joseph with the Martley/Bewdley connection. Maybe Grandfather/Uncle?

Smiley Looks like Ellen belonged to a  dynasty before she ran off with the 'black sheep'of the Tatham family.

    Pudford Farm....
Benjeman Turley  74 Farmer of 233 Acres b Martley
    Sarah   Turley  72                                 b Witley
    Sarah     Turley  33 unm                        bMartley
    Maria     Turley    32 unm                           ''
    Thomas Turley

    Puickley Farm....
James Turley  31  Farmer of 199 Acres  b martley employing 4 Lab

    Lower Hollen...
Joseph Turley  30  Unm  Farmer 200 Acres b Martley employing 10 Lab (maybe son of Joseph Senior and brother of Ellen?)

Even though i had found the earlier Edward Tatham in the 51 census showing being born in 1834 in Martley there are no  generations of  Tatham Families at all in 1851 in Martley, which makes me think he is going to turn out to be a son of James and Ellen.  Strange to think that Ellen only died in 1856 and Louisa ended up in the workhouse rather than being taken in by what looks like  Ellens family.  Maybe in marrying this James Thomas Tatham she had caused herself to be cut off from her family?
Huh Huh ???still looking for James.......... Looks like i will be an ancestor before i find him...LOL....

                  best wishes cheryle

Thanks once again for the wonderful info.

The 1881 census for Louisa is correct. It is only the first key to a series of illegitamicy in the Tatham line. Louisa had two children out of wedlock, Rosannah one, and Louisa's daughter Ellen also had one. And they say illegitmanicy does not run in familys!!

Thanks, Tippin

Just though I would let you know that I think I have found James on the 1861 census. He has two other children with him, George and Ellen, both born in London. (Ellen is first link). Then, his occupation is a Gunnier (Link numer two), and he is living in Walsall, where Louisa's first son Joseph is born (Link three).

Also, I have them on 1841, but Ellen is down as Eleanor, hence the 'blacksheep' bit. But it was all down to your help that I managed to find them.

Thanks to the information you gave me, I think I may just have solved the Tatham mystery!!

James was born in London, Middlesex, and Edward is one of James's and Ellen's children.
