Leavesden Asylum
« on: Sunday 12 February 06 13:00 GMT (UK) »

Hi Everyone

Can anyone give me any information on the Leavesden Asylum?  My Great Aunt was an inmate there between 1904 and 1922.  She was interred there when she died at the age of 18.

Do any records exist as I would like to know why she was there (rumour has it that she had Downs Syndrome).  Does the cemetary still exist as I know that the site has now been built on.

Thanks,
Lisa

I may be wrong, but I believe records of Leavesden Asylum are held by the London Metropolitan Archives.I am afraid I can't help with regard to the cemetery.

I had an ancestor die there in the 1880's, but have not had a chance to follow it up.

Some of the records are (also?) in Watford Museum.  However any personal records are subject to 100 year closure,  although you can sometimes reduce this if you can claim to be surviving next of kin.

Hi Lisa

This is a very interesting site with lots of information about Leavesden.  It states that Leavesden records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.  This is probably because the administation of the hospital passed to London County Council in 1930.
