Davis/Davies problem

hi,

my main interest is james davis/davies he was born about 1857 stated in stoddiston shropshire, this is my brickwall, he was in stoke-on-trent in 1881 married but i have no info on any part of his family, all i have is his father on his marriage cert as john davis, i cannot find birth or him on any of the staffs census before 1881.
