Family History Local Radio Events Weekend

Many our local BBC Radio stations are hosting Family History events across the Country. This is an excellent introduction for beginners maybe inspired by the “Who do you think you are” series to start their own research.

I have posted under many of the Counties to let people know of these events in their own area and we are pleased to let you know that we have some exciting events going on  - Online this Weekend.

BBC Gloucestershire

Arranroots and Keziahemm will be at Gloucester  ONLINE as Username BBC Gloucs.  The Girls will be there to help new users navigate around RootsChat, and with Arranroots and Keziahemm’s help learn how to use the information they already have to compose posts that hopefully we all here can hope to reply.

These posts will be left open for the week.

BBC Humberside

Suttontrust will be at the Hull Open Centre in Hull on Saturday giving out some of our new RootsChat cards and answering questions about how RootsChat can help. If anyone is going to Hull make sure you go and say hello

BBC Merseyside

MaryA
is over at the Liverpool Learning Centre which is offering a drop-in centre for all those needing help       with there family history.

BBC Manchester and Lancashire

Trystan and I are hoping to get to these two events on Saturday and Sunday.

BBC Devon

Maureen will be at Plymouth Library on Saturday giving out RootsChat Cards and Advice. Please say hello if you see her.

We are hoping that this is an event that we can all partake in wherever we are. I am very excited  Smiley Smiley

What a Great Day Grin

Trystan and I went to the Manchester pump house, we met lots of nice people who were serious about researching their family history. We had the use of a computer thanks to Harriot and we were able to show people how RootsChat worked. Everyone was very impressed with us all !!!

Whilst online I saw Arranroots and her pals and I have heard that they had a great day with over 600 people attending the Gloucestershire Event how impressive is that  Shocked Shocked

Hi all,

Did anyone else go along to one of the Family History event run by BBC radio this weekend?  I went through to the one in Edinburgh, but was pretty disappointed by the whole thing.

They appeared to have totally underestimated the potential popularity of the event.  There was a long queue already present when I joined (only 5 minutes after the supposed opening time) and I had to wait in it for about 90 minutes before I could get in.  They were only letting a small amount in at any one time due to fire regulations (which is fair enough - safety is paramount), and once in it was a real scrum to speak to any of the experts and getting access to do any searches was near impossible.

They quite openly admitted that they hadn't expected the turnout that they got, but I would have though that with the popularity of the series, they would have guessed that a few hundred people would turn up!

Were the other events around the country the same?

Cheers,
Clare
