Hi All,
I have been trying to establish if the following family were residing in Lewes in 1871 and I think with help from Chris and a bit of luck on my part to have proved this to be the case (but I am yet to find them on the census!).
The family is as follows in 1861
Tunwell Cottage Tunbridge Wells
Henry Tarrant 38 Ladies Shoemaker b St Pancras Abigail 31 Shoe Binder b East Dean Sussex Henry W 15 Teacher of Pupils b St marylebone Peter 5 b Tunbridge Wells James 2 b Ditto Kitty 7 months b Ditto Elizabeth Baker Boarder 22 Serv b Heathfield Sussex. Mary A Baker 5 months b Wokefield Sussex
Now I know that in 1881 they were living in Lancaster Street, Lewes. I also know that in 1878 a son John George was baptised in Lewes and now I have located the death of Abigail in Lewes district in 1867.
So it looks likely that they were in Lewes in 1871, has anyone got the census and would be willing to look them up for me.
Rgds Kevin.

Hi Kevan
According to the "Household and Political directory of Lewes in 1871", it only shows 1 Tarrant family as listed below: (Census cross refenced with the Voting preference in the 1868 general election)
45 Sun Street - Henry Tarrant, aged 26, born Christchurch, Hampshire, 4 members in the household
Could this be the 15 year old in 1861? who has now married and has his own family. (incidentally, Sun Street is at right angles to and next to Lancaster Street)
There are NO other Tarrants in Lewes in 1871 - unless the census tells us different

Hi Chris,
I originally thought this could be the son, but his birth place differs and I think I have found him in Gravesend in 1871 aged 25 and recently married.
As I stated I know they were in Lewes in 1867 when Abigail died and also 1878 when John was baptised, but I suppose they could have been away for the census. If they are in Lewes perhaps they have been mistranscribed, it would be nice to find them in 71 but at this time it isn't worth the cost of the census to me, particularly as it is unlikely to give me any further information - just completeness.
Thanks for your time anyway I do appreciate it.
Regards Kevin.
