Hi Jan,

I cannot find any Sarah Tivey employed as a servant in Melbourne of around the right age in 1841.

There are three Sarahs indexed, age 25, living in Melbourne at the time, all with families.  As you are doubtless aware, ages were rounded down in 1841 to the nearest 5 - so those listed as 25 could be anything between 25 and 29.

There are also two Sarahs, neither in Melbourne, listed as being 15 (so 15 to 19).

Do you have any additional information which might help to identify this particular person e.g parents' or siblings' names, ages etc.?

I'll can either have another look for you if you have more information or alternatively set out the entries for each of the five Sarah Tivey groupings.

Regards,

Hi lancs.fox

(re u from Lancs?)

The Sarah Tivey I Am looking for was born abt 1826 in Worthington leicestershire - her father John Tivey was born in Melbourne and there were many connections to Melbourne.  We have searched (with the help of others ) the leicestershire census and I just wondered whether she would be living as a domestic in a relatives house in 1841 as she wasnt in Leicestershire - the problem i have is that Melbourne/Staunton harold/Worthington and Burton on Trent arent that far away from one another - as the crow flies - and this means colating data from a possible three counties!  I think she may have married in Dec Qtr 1845 Leicester but who to i have no idea as the reference isnt clear.

Her Mothers maiden name was Edwards (Ann) and her grandmothers was Fairbrother (Mary)- She had Uncles Thomas (wife Catherine Dent) William (Huh)  and George (wife mary edwards) and at least one tru aunt Hannah Tivey (Beresford at Marriage) all were born in Melbourne,

I have information on all 8 of her siblings but Sarah remains a mystery - there is no death registered for her pre 1851 - but I dont know who she married - was hoping 1841 could hold a clue as she wasnt with her family in Worthington, Leicestershire in '41

Cheers and thanks for your interest

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the additional information, particularly Sarah Tivey's county of birth and more precise age.

Although I cannot find a Sarah Tivey in Derbyshire who fits the bill, I have found the following entry for Leicestershire:

1841 Census

Normanton le Heath, Leicestershire

William Boam - 55 - Blacksmith - b. Leicestershire

Fanny Boam - 57 - b. Leicestershire

Sarah Tivy (sic) - 15 - Female Servant - b. Leicestershire

John Poxon - 17 - Blacksmith's Apprentice - b. Leicestershire

John Mason - 15 - Male Servant - b. Leicestershire

Reference:  HO107 / 0602 / f.11-3 / p.1

Normanton le Heath is about 8 miles due south of Melbourne - not an impossible distance, even in those days, for her to have travelled to find work.

So, could this be your girl?

If not, I'll keep looking.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Jan,

The reference for the marriage of Sarah in 1845 is:

Marriage - Sarah Tivey - Leicester - 1845 December Quarter - vol. 15 - p. 192

The image on www.ancestry.co.uk is crystal clear.

I hadnt looked on ancestry - i did look on freebmd but the image was smudged so I couldnt match the reference - I presumed they were from the same source.

Cheers
