Greenwood - Aldershot Barracks
« on: Monday 13 February 06 00:23 GMT (UK) »

Huh My mother, Molly Greenwood and her brother John Greenwood were born at the Aldershot Barracks in July 1910 and May 1908 respectively. However, I have been unable to find any actual record of their births and neither of them ever had a birth certificate. My grandfather was groom to the C.O. of the Gordon Highlanders at the time.
Can anybody tell me why there is no proper record of their birth or, if there is such a record, tell me where I might find it.
Regards,

Hi Barry

The registration district for Aldershot is Farnham.

http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/district.htm

I checked Sep qtr for 1909 & 1911 & all qtr's for 1910 but could not find a Molly in Farnham district. Searching Jun qtr for John I found this one in the GRO indexes.

John GREENWOOD Jun qtr, vol 2a, pg 145, Farnham

Hope this helps a little

Smiley Many, many thanks for your quick response. Is this Farnham the Hampshire or the Surrey one ? I had looked through the Birth Indexes without success but I might have been looking in the wrong place but found no Molly Greenwoods at all.
Just to check, you did look at 1910 for Molly ?
She so loved her mother that she wouldn't push over the matter of the Birth Certificate during her lifetime and by the time my grandmother died my mother had given up. In order to qualify her for the Old Age Pension she had to use the proof of her name on the register of her primary school in Yorkshire !!

Hi Barry

I have no idea if it is Farnham Surrey or Hampshire as the indexes only give you a district not a county.

I see from your email aggress that you live in the UK so I would suggest you write to the local Hampshire Registry Office - you will find the address if you follow the link for the Reg districts I sent you. All you need to do is ask them if they have a birth for John in June 1908. They do not use the GRO codes as the births are listed alphabetically for each year.

They need a cheque for 7GBPs which I usually make out to Superintendent Registrar also enclose a self stamped addresses envelope. IF they do not have the birth cert they will return the cheque so it will only cost you the price of 2 stamps.

These are the only 2 entries I could find for a Molly GREENWOOD & both are in 1911. Neither of them are in Hampshire but they do state the mother's maiden name which if you have John's birth cert will help to eliminate
them.

Molly GREENWOOD, Sep qtr, 1911, vol 8e, pg 1560, Chorlton (Lancashire) mothers maiden name WHITEHEAD

Molly A. GREENWOOD, Sep qtr, 1911, vol3a, pg 160, Brentford (Middlesex) mothers maiden name WIDDOWSON

Farnham registration district happens to be one that includes parts of both counties.  Farnham the town and ancient parish is in Surrey and very close to the county border, but the registration district covers some parts of Hampshire.

Smiley Many thanks, Little Nell, for your help. I have written to the Superintendent Registrar as you suggested. I have ordered a copy of my uncle's birth certificate, giving the reference which you kindly found and I sent two cheques, asking if they will check the actual records to see whether my mother's entry might have been mis-transcribed.

Pardon my inexperience, Kev, but not what other one ?
I really am desperate to "nail" my grandfather down. I haven't been able to find anything at all for him or, come to that, for my mother who was possibly born whilst grandfather was at Aldershot barracks in July 1910. He was almost certainly there in 1908 (as you say) when my uncle, John Greenwood jnr, was born. I went to TNA at Kew with the intention of trying to discover more but drew a blank so ANYTHING you can give me will be very, very gratefully received.

Sorry, Barry. i Wasn't clear.

I think that is the birth registration for your UNCLE John Greenwood. At Aldershot barracks, thatbis the cert you want.

He may also have been registered in Farnham, but the one i posted is definately him.

Your mum is not registered in the same listing.

Can't find anything on your Grandad as yet, but i am looking.
