Hi all,
I am looking into my family history. My grandfather was born at Ynyscynon Road, Penygraig. Last night I was looking for living relaties in Penygraig on b4u, and found one living at Ynyscynon Road. Do you think I should ring them, explain who I am , and ask if they are a relative?

Personally, if i were them I would prefer a letter than a phone call. That way they aren't 'put on the spot', nor will you have to convince them you are not selling something before you can start a meaningful conversation. A letter would give you a chance to state all the relevant facts that you have, and invite their response in their own time and in their own way. But - yes I would definitely make contact In Geneology you cannot afford to leave any stone unturned as you never know what will come up. All the best Lizdb

Hi all,
Well, I did it, for two reasons. 1. The mail is too unreliable, i would never know if they got it and were ignoring me, or they didnt get it at all. 2. I am too bloody impatient lol.
It paid off aswell, turned out her hubby was the relative who shared my surname, and if she recalls, he has lived in that house form birth. She told me her hubbys gran was also of the same surname as i am researching, and she was going to quiz him when he got home, because it may be that my grandfather was his mothers cousin! The name i gave her rang a bell!!!
If it is the case, it paid off, if not, she says she knows the other families in the street with that surname, and she will speak to them and pass on my details.

Definitely yes!
I have done so on a few times and they have been relatives I did not know existed! Life is too short. Since I moved in with my partner of 8 years I have packed more into a week, day month than most other people do in 3 months or a year. Mainly family history research as we are both addicts with 13000 ancestors between us so far
Cheers

Hi Chui
Have got back on one line to 1536 I think, in Scotland near Elgin thanks to the IGI. Most other lines only go back to about 1600's as the civil war made a mess of records, some I cannot get back before 1811! Going forward on the siblings branch is also tricky sometimes unles there is another researcher. I do collect all twigs and branches hence the size of the tree, but I do make a lot of contacts.
Cheers
