Looking for WEBBER of Camerton
« on: Sunday 26 September 04 20:33 UTC (UK) »

Hello All

New to this forum and thought I would try and see if anyone could help, share information or even give some good advice. Looking for info on Webber`s of Camerton - John Webber & Hester Webber living at Whitebrooke Lane, Camerton (1851 census) with 6 children at the time. Have found them in the 1841 census living in the same area. I believe they had 7 children possibly 9 in total:- John, Elizabeth,George, Frederick, Rhoda, Shadrach,Charlotte, Clara?, Ann? . I believe I found their marriage details from familyhistoryonline,  John Webber + Hester Filer status SOJ married 2apr 1832 parish Shepton Mallet but this gives no mention of ages or parents of groom and bride. So if anyone has come across this particular family in research or has any info I would be grateful for any help. Pete   Smiley

Noticed your also looking for FIDDIMORE's in UK.  I'm a Fiddimore living in Surrey.  A second cousin of mine contacted me a fews years back after he had complied some ancestory from our Grandfathers, Reginald and Thomas.  They had 3 more brothers and a sister and lived in Belmont Surrey.  I have a copy of the tree he drew.   It only goes back to probably my great great grandfather, another Thomas Fiddimore born in 1800's.  Don't have it in front of me today - but i can dig it out and fill in any gaps you may have.

I've seen "otp" in parish records (of this parish) but what does "soj" mean please?

Thanks!

SOJ - sojourner. In basic terms SOJ means someone who is a temporary resident., but in parish marriage registers its meaning is a little more precise. When the 1754 - 1837 Hardwicke Marriage Act was passed, clerks were required to write down the parish of each person who married. If the couple had been resident for more than 3 weeks they were shown as OTP (of this parish). However for someone who had only taken up residence in lodgings to avoid the bann fees, this was frowned upon and the word "sojourner" or SOJ abb. was added to the marriage entry to indicate that they had met the letter of the law but did`nt really belong.

Hardwicke Marriage Act 1754-1837. stated that everyone had to marry in a licensed church in their own parish. Banns (notices of intentions to marry) were read publicly on three separate Sundays, which gave the opportunity for anyone to object. This gave the opportunity for parents of minors (under the age of 21) or previous spouses to call a halt to the proposed wedding.
It was also possible for couples to marry by licence in a different parish church to that of their residence. By this method banns were not read although it was still possible for someone to call an objection to the marriage at the start of the ceremony.

Because John & Hester Webber had SOJ in the register for there marriage this would show that Shepton Mallet was not their parish of residence.
There residence at that period was around Camerton-Wellow- Dunkerton area which was a fair distance away from Shepton Mallet.
I believe the reason they got married in Shepton Mallet was that they both were very young (16?, possibly pregnant  Shocked)and did not have the consent of there parents, and to avoid the banns being read out at there local parish church and any objections being made to there marriage.

Hi Pete

Remember me from Curious Fox? I sent you my Webber family information some time ago, but you never got around to sending me yours. Wonder if you would be good enough to return the favour now?

Best wishes
