Anyone come across the name GEERAT?
« on: Sunday 26 September 04 23:00 BST (UK) »

I have an Agnes GEERAT in my tree, married 1621 in Crowhurst to William Hobden. However, I am having great difficulty in finding any other GEERAT's at all. Anyone come across this unusual name?

If there was such a surname it would be Dutch in origin [judging by the construction] but I cannot even find a Dutch family with that name.
You might seriously consider the possibility that this is a misprint or a faulty transcription or simply a misspellng of another more common surname.
Have you actually seen this record or a photocopy of it yourself?
Only today I have posted details on how I found a single family with the surname spelt, at various times within a period of only 20 years, Southern, Southan, Sowthan.

Hi there Amy

Just looked in Reaneys book of Surnames, and it is not listed

Nearest to it is Geer / Geere and variants which are Middle English and mean 'Sudden fit of Passion' or 'Wild or changeful mood'

Looked in the Great Universal Directory of 1793 - 98, but Crowhurst is not listed. So looked at the names of the big towns villages like Chichester/ Brighton/ Horsham - but the name did not appear.

Would tend to agree with Hackstaple that it is a corruption or mis transcription of something

Garrat is a common enough name, with the right number of letters and of a type that could have been misread But, are there any Garrats in Crowhurst - and of course there may be other Crowhursts to consider.
