finding an old address?
« on: Friday 06 January 06 17:32 GMT (UK) »

Hi, I'm hoping that a kind knowleagable person can provide me with a web site for looking at old addresses in Derbyshire.  In particular I am looking for Pools Hole and Green Lane in Hartington Upper Quarter.  I am planning a visit in a couple of months and I would like to obtain as much information as possible before I go, as I will only be there for a couple of days.

Many thanks for your time

A village search which says that Hartington Upper Quarter is now Burbage but you may well know this.
You could also try http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/frontpag.htm which covers place names in Derbyshire.Could it be Pools Cavern ?

Hello,

If you're still looking for help on this maybe I can help. I have quite a bit of local knowledge of the buxton/burbage area.

Mike, thank you Grin.  I would very much appreciate your help.  My PC has gone off to be updated at the moment-I'm using a lap-top and have no access to my files.

I'm hoping for it's return in the next week and if you don't mind I will pick your brains endlessly Shocked

Many thanks again - much appreciated

Hi Mike - I'm going to take you up on your kind offer of help.

I would like to know if the following places are still around today - all the places are listed in various census material as situated in Burbage.  I am planning a visit soon but don't want to be wandering aimlessly around clutching an A t Z in my grubby mit!

Here's what I'm looking for

Pooles Hole
Green lane
Grin Row

Many thanks for your time and help - it is very much appreciated

Hi,

Grin Row - the houses still exist although the address doesn't if you see what I mean (the houses are now classified as being on Grin Low Road). This link to streetmap shows the precise location, from what I know they were originally railwaymen's cottages in fact part of the Cromford and High Peak ran along the back of these cottages and across the road down to limestone quarry, it's now a caravan park. You can see more if you use www.old-maps.co.uk and search for Burbage.

Pooles Hole - this is not an address as such it's a tourist attraction and today is called Poole's Cavern and is part of the Buxton Country Park I've marked the approximate location here. Apparently it was originally a smuggler's cave you should be able to find out about it's history as a grand tour destination by googling it.

Green lane - this is rather a long road (approx. 1.5 miles) running from here to here past the original Buxton college site and Poole's cavern. There are a large number of address on this road most of them are Victorian however a number are lot older and some younger. You'll probably need some some more info to narrow down where you need to be on this street.

Hope this helps.
