Help and Advice , please

I wonder if someone can tell me the best way to proceed.

I have discovered from the UK Censuses that my great-great-grandfather William GODDARD married Mary (b c1840) from Cork.

He was a soldier and had daughters born in Canada in c1860 and in Quebec, Canada in c1866. He then a daughter born in Kildare in c1870, a son in Aldershot in c1872 and my great-grandfather John James in Athlone in c1874. By 1881 he had left the army and they were in Wales.

My first need is to find Mary's maiden name and I think a copy of the birth certificate for John James should provide that. Am I best writing with the information above to the GRO in Roscommon and asking them to supply it or should I try elsewhere? (I can't give a precise year for John James' birth - he was 7 on the 1881 census which could mean he was born 1873 or 1874)

I woud also like to find William and Mary's marriage - but again I don't know the year. It's possible that they married before William went to Canada (by c1860) and the older childen were Mary's, but it is also possible that they are the children of an earlier marriage and that he married Mary sometime before their daughter was born c1870.

Are there resources available to look for the marriage - eg. will a request on the Cork board be likely to provide an answer - or is there a better way forward.

Many thanks in anticipation!
John
