Mental Aslym in Lochgilphead
« on: Thursday 16 February 06 11:49 GMT (UK) »

Hi does anyone know the name of the mental asylum in Lochgilphead, in the 1940's.
My gg grandfather may have been sent there, he was suffering from senile decay over 6 months when he died, and was sent there from Risk Street Home, Dumbarton, in 1945, he died in the December.

Would there be records anywhere for the asylum?

Thanks

Pettsy

Hi Pettsy

Lochgilhead Asylum was the Argyll & Bute District Asylum in 1896 (One of my rellies died there!) but the name was changed to reduce the stigma and it became a Psychiatric Hospital.
There will no doubt be records of all inmates/patients but they may not be open to the public particularly as it was relatively recent.
The Health Board for the area is going through a re-organisation just now so I'm not sure where their archives would be held.
You could apply to Edinburgh at gro-scotland.gov.uk for a copy of his death certificate if you have details of name, address, a rough idea of his date of death. As I have found, sometimes the certificate may not contain all the details you might expect although more recent records will probably be more accurate than those in the late 1800s.

Hi Russell,
Thanks.
I have got a copy of his death certificate.
He died Dec 1945 age 85 years.
He was living in Risk Street home, Dumbarton until they moved him to the Asylum, where he died.
Risk Street home is the equivalent to a hostel today.

This morning I found out where he is buried.
I just wanted to know if there were any records, but you are right as it is less than 75 years since he went into the asylum/died.

Have you contacted them regarding you rellie?

Hi Pettsy

Like you I have her death certificate and at the time they seemed to have very little info on her background. They didn't even know her husband's name far less her parents names so I didn't think it was worth while.
I doubt you would learn much from their records either. If he was moved from a hostel it probably means he was becoming confused and mildly dementing so they would not be able to find out much from him and hostels often had only basic records too.
I know the place quite well from years ago when I was in psychiatric nursing and we used to visit there with the football team and the bowls teams. We used to hire a coach and drive up from Glasgow (Leverndale Hospital) It was a lovely journey. Coming back was quite different because their hospitality was excellent. Some folks had to poured off the bus when we got home in the early hours!!

I still can't seem to find any records, but at least I know where he is buried and where he died.

It is very sad that his wife died young in 1906, he was left to bring up their 7 children alone and in WW1 four of his five sons were killed in Action/died of wounds, including my g grandfather.

I couldn't begin to imagine what he went through  Cry

Hi Pettsy

I agree, some of the information is horrifying1

I woder sometimes if one of the reasons we look for family is to thank our lucky stars that we didn't live then and have to endure what they went through.
So far my families (mine and my wife's ) seem to have fairly charmed lives and lived through WW1. Maybe I still have stories to uncover when I fill some of the gaps that we still have.
I'm so glad you found out where he was buried. It completes things somehow.
Last year we looked for relatives in Halkirk, in Caithness. Although we didn't find them even the paupers grave area was so still and tranquil it was quite reassuring.
Hope your next quest is successful.

Hi Russell,
Yes it does you wonder what they mean when they say "The good old days"  Huh

I am glad I have found out where he is buried, though I wont be able to visit his lair in May, it is too far from where we are staying in Glasgow (only there 2 nights)
but I am able to visit 3 other lairs of his wife, father, grandfather etc....

Good luck with you research too  Wink

Hi Runner
I went to Scotland (Glasgow) and got to see the lairs in OK Cemertery, and even found other ancestors in another cemetery in Kilmaronoch (near Bonhill, Balloch, Drymen)
But I didn't get to see James Munn tombstone, too far, maybe next time.

I have found a 5th cousin in Glasgow though, which was great, a lovely man, who showed my parents and I all  all the sights, Loch Lomond, Trossachs etc....
I can't wait for my next trip.

I never dod get an answer from the council regarding the mental aslym.

Did you have any luck?

Hi Pettsy

Glad your trip was so worthwhile.

Making contact with a relative, no matter how distant, is a great feeling.

We visited graveyards down in Ayrshire a week or so ago and made several 'finds'. It was luck more than anything. We had made no preparations and I would recommend anyone setting out to look for the graves/lairs of older ancestors does some homework first and finds out where the lair is before you go.

I haven't tried to contact the local authority or health board about my relative. We have some info on her earlier life and will leave it at that. I don't suppose they would be able to tell me much more than I have now.
You'll enjoy Lochgilphead and the surrounding countryside when you go. Some of the views across the sealochs are breathtaking.

Hi Russell
Have you tried to see if you have any rellies on the poor relief, in the books at the Mitchell.
I had a look last week, I have some which may be mine, but I have to check to parents names first.

I need to visit the cemetery in Lochgilphead next.
