Essex 1861 lookup - Knight
« on: Friday 17 February 06 15:28 GMT (UK) »

I have John Knight (age 15) son of Thomas and Mary at Great Easton on 1841 Census.   He then disappears until 1871 where is is married to Martha with 2 children.  I know 1851 is non existent for this area.

There is a possibility he was in the army - but where would I find him.   Any help gratefully received.

Hi Two Hoots

Grin Welcome to Rootschat Grin

Do you have his marriage certificate?  Just incase not there is a Martha Allerton on the same page as a John Knight September Quarter 1867 in Dunmow, Essex.  The reference is Volume 4a Page 551.

As to the Army question Roll Eyes might be a bit difficult without any clues at all.  I notice that he is an Agricultural Labourer on 1871 Census.  I wonder if once he left home if his details were mis-transcribed, before he wedded and settled down Huh I'll have a look.

Best wishes

Hi, Wendi,

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I have marriage certificate dated 27 July 1867 to Martha Allerton.

I have also found them on 1871/81/91 census but on 1901 census Martha is shown as widow.

I have a death certificate dated 8th April 1896 which I am sure is for this JOhn on which it states occupation as Agricultural Labourer Army Pensioner that is why I wonder if he was in the army sometine between 1841 to 186?   His age at marriage also seems rather old- another reason that he may have been away in the army.

If you can throw on light on it I would be grateful.  Being failry new to this I have only just sorted our basic searching.

Many thanks

Hi Two Hoots

Seems you have done really well with your research & I think it's always nice when someone likes to "bring the people to life" rather than just record names and dates.

If he was an army pensioner it's possible his service record is at Kew, which would mean a visit or employing a professional researcher to look for you.

Perhaps someone else has some ideas Huh
