Hello,
Could a kind soul please lookup SUTHERS in the 1841 or 1851 Ipswich census.
I'm looking for the family of William Suthers born in Bury, Lancashire about 1795/98. His wife was probably Ann born 1800. Possible children are William born 1820 Ipswich, John born 1823 Ipswich, Henry born 1829 Ipswich, Mary Ann born approx 1832 Ipswich, Thomas B. born 1838 Ipswich and Jeremiah born 1840 Ipswich.
As far as I know, these were the only Suthers residing in Suffolk around that period.
Thanks in advance,
Steve Suthers

Hi Steve Welcome to Rootschat. We will need Rick to help with your request for 41 and 51. He will b sleeping but i am sure he will c what he can c when he comes online. Tried to ask if u had these but u went off line so Thought I may as well look at 71 to c if can can begin to narrow down which area of Ipswich and I find
Rg10/1750 ED 9 Folio 33 Page 17 Entry 94 1 Hanaford Cut Ipswich St Matthew
William Suthers Head 76 Widow b Bury Lancaster Out Door Pauper
RG10/1722 ED 9 Folio 114 Page 6 Entry 23 George Inn High Street Hadleigh Suffolk
William Sutters Head 51 Married b Ipswich Innkeeper May Ford Visitor Unmarried 52 b London Charlotte Farthing Servant 15 bLindsey Suffolk Domestic Servant
RG10/504 ED 6 Folio 22 Page 8 Entry 47 19 Fort Street Old Artillery Ground London
Henry Suthers Head 40 b Ipswich Commercial Clerk Earthalinda Suthers Wife 29 b Ipswich
That is all I can C in 71 census
I did later go through Ipswich St Matthew without success in 61 Finally found Hanaford cut right at the end of the parish and William not there Heres hoping Ricks 51 census index will give him a clue as to where to look in 41. Unfortunately the earlier Censuses r not indexed in it is a big job trying to find them. Kris

Hi Kris,
Thanks for your help. I've looked at the 1871-1901 census, also have found about 20 BDM indices and a dozen burials at Ipswich Cemetery. I'm hoping the 1851 census will confirm that William of Bury was the head of the family and that the other individuals that I mentioned were siblings, without having to order too many certificates. I don't think the 1861 census will be very helpful as all the children had married, died or moved away by then.
Cheers,
Steve

Here are all the SUTHERS from the 1851 census index. The full return is only available on film at present. I will check the 1841 for you later. This isn't indexed so will take a little while.

As promised here is the family in 41. The 1841 does not record relationships nor place of birth. Adult ages are often rounded to nearest 5.
