Could you see if you can find a marriage in Lewes between THOMAS PHILLIPS and SARAH (surname possibly SMITH) please? It took place c1817 but I don't know at which church. They had children baptised at St John sub Castro in 1820 and 1824 so that may be a clue. Ann

Hi Rains4
You say that Thomas & Sarah had children baptised in St John Sub Castro 1820 and 1824 - but I can only see 1 possible child in 1820 - also, Thomas is down on the marriage licence as Farmer, but, and if it is the same person, down in the Church records as Ostler.
These are the baptisms for Phillips / Philips for St John Sub Castro

Thanks Jane and Chris for your help. It now looks as though I have the wrong couple for my 3x great grandparents. The FFHS online search tells me that Caroline Philips ( the name of my 2xgreat grandmother) was baptised 5.12.1824 and her parents were Thomas (an ostler) and Sarah. Chris's list of baptisms has this Caroline's parents as George and Mary Ann. However, analyzing the family of the other Caroline Philips who was baptised in 1824, parents Philip and Ann, leads to me think that it is this one who is my ancestor. Three names which occur in later generations of my family appear here, including the fairly uncommon one of Rhoda. I also note that, at the time of the youngest child's baptism, they were living on Priory Street, Lewes. This is an address that occurs many times later on for my Lewes relations...my mother was born at a Priory Street address. So...thank you very much Rootschat for your help once again. You seem to have sorted things out for me! I'm so glad I found your site. Ann

Oh dear Chris, it is a bit complicated and I'm sure the way I wrote it didn't help! Sorry. However, the census info you have given me certainly does fit...and those names DO recur in later generations of the family, so it looks as though we've got 'em. Thanks ...yet again. I've lost count of the number of times you have helped me now. I'm very grateful. Ann
