Hi Rootchatters
I have now added the Words Family Graves to the title of this topic. That is because it came to my attention some time ago. Some people when just looking at the title, think the M.I's are from War memorials. As you can see they are not.Nearly all of the Grave stones have the merchant navy anchor on the top,(That enabled me to do the easy ones first Grin ) So you know one of the buried was a seaman.Even if it is not mentioned on the grave stone itself, Nearly all these graves contain relatives of the first one buried in the grave .Not necessarily the seaman. Also in some graves there are people with different surnames,Married daughters or grandchildren. Some of the deceased, came from Wales or Scotland originally. Others died in other countries. Ships are mentioned H.M.S and S.S.
So it is worth trawling through the pages,if you think you have an ancestor  who might be buried in the cemetery but don't know one of the family was a seaman (it could be a brother or son-in-law). When i am asked for a burial lookup i always check this topic first.Hope this will be of some help to you Smiley

Yes & yes Grin
All burials anywhere have to have burial records.Council cemetery records are all on film in the library of the area.Or any archives in the wirral.

I realise that I am a few years behind the times but I can answer at least one question that no one seems to have. When a merchant seaman died he was commonly known to have "crossed the bar".  The bar being the area of any river mouth where sand and silt had been deposited from the river flowing out to the sea.  The most famous of course being the Mersey bar where they used to have the bar lightship.

I attended a funeral at Rake lane cemetery recently and was a bit annoyed that forces gravestones were sticking out at all angles.  I understand these are the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves people so I suppose I should have another look and report it to them.  I don't think it is vandalism, just lack of care.  I was also annoyed that the council guys had run their digger over a grave and flattened a headstone into the ground to reopen the grave of the funeral I was attending. I know they have a job to do and it is very difficult to get at some graves but they don't appear to put it right afterwards and just leave the stone lying there until it becomes overgrown.  Having said that, I was looking for a family plot a couple of years back and one of the workers there was most helpful and found it for me.  Sadly there was no stone and I am not sure if there ever was?

In 2006 there was a very bad spate of vandalism and it was reported in depth.  One of the alleged vandals was supposed to have written an apology to the press stating drink as the reason for it. Now if ever a punishment were to fit the crime then these "people" should be made to work in the cemetery in any way we can think fit. Not putting people out of work you understand but cleaning the place up and the like.

A good lot of my family are buried there going back to when it first opened and I for one was brought up to respect cemeteries, churches and the like even though I am not particularly religious. Where did it all go wrong?

About twenty years ago when the council lost interest ,i have to say during the three years it took me to collect all the above M.I's i made friends with the workmen there. They do their best to keep up with keeping the cemetery in order. I and probably hundreds of others over the years have complained about the open all hours cemetery. No Locked gates fallen perimeter railings open to all,as you have probably seen there was a article in the newspaper a while back about that spat of vandalism. The councilors where at the cemetery like a shot,a group of residents were to form a sort of friends of the cemetery.Nothing more has been heard of them and as far as i know the council are still wearing ear plugs Wink

I found this headstone the other day fallen and broken so i thought i had better record it before it dissapears under the earth Grin,I probably have it ,but the name doesn't ring any bells.I thought it a bit odd that there are no ages or places if lived outside the area at death. So think it might be a memorial,it wont be known till a lookup is done. However i decided for curiosity Wink To see if i could find any registrations. The first,William Prescott who died in April 1914.Wasn't registered till June 1914 & he was 76 years.

The second William Prescott 1885 doesn't fit  only one registered for that year.

Edith Prescott Oct 1892. If this is Edith her full name was Edith May Prescott and she was 23 years old.Late registration again Dec 1892 Reg B/H Sub dis Wallasey
I cannot find Florence,Florence who? I have looked under Prescott nothing showing.
Oh dear i pressed the wrong size Roll Eyes Grin

This is a most interesting site Celia.

It is so nice to think that someone is preserving for posterity the gravestones of the past. You will be blessed by the family histories of the people who's relis are buried in this cemetery.

I know that some of my family in Liverpool were Mariners, but I don't think that any of them died at sea.   Truth is I don't yet know because I am still trying to trace them.   Huh

OH Uncle was torpedoed and thankfully survived off the coast of Malta.  He served In Lord Louis Mountbatten's ship. There is a picture of the ship's crew in the War Museum in Valletta, we were very surprised to find that.
