There is an ongoing project to photograph every war grave, whether a military type stone or a family one. The hope is that eventually, anyone searching for someone lost in war, will be able not only access the details on-line but to see a photograph of the memorial stone.

This is an entirely voluntary exercise, this organisation are crying out for volunteers. If there's anyone out there who fancies helping them out, visit www.wargraves.org.uk.

Hello Ann
I presume your message is for me Grin The memorial inscription's all collected by me during the last twelve months over many hours and weekend's. Is to coincide with my other topic of look ups for the same cemetery. Most of them are local merchant seamen. who lived in the area. Some of the inscriptions are not compleat for the privacy of living relatives. So if anyone finds a member of their family among my M.I's  . They can contact me On RootsChat for a look up(on Celia's Rake Lane) for  more information. Because the two topics work together. I am afraid i am to busy with my own project to volunteer to another one.  Because I also receive emails from abroad off site. From people who know there G./Grandfathers were buried in Rake lane. I am sure if you put a post on the appropriate site someone might like  to help  out with council cemeteries  in there Spare time.

Hi Celia,

I hope you weren't offended by my message. It wasn't my intention!

My point was only that as you probably know already, anyone looking for where their war lost are can visit the War Graves 'official' site (www.cwgc.org) and get a note of all the details there.

I too am a 'graveyarder' of sorts, although most of my local cemeteries have been listed and published (Scottish Monumental Inscriptions - East and West Stirlingshire Pre-1855 by J. Mitchell & S. Mitchell). There are no photographs, so I'm doing by 'bit'.

Hi Annie
did i  come over as offended sorry must watch my wording Grin
I have visited that site myself  in the past .looking for my dad who was lost at sea in the Malta Convoy in 1943. I never found him so i presume it was up to family to have there losed loved ones put forward. I have only so far covered less then half of the cemetery in  over 12 months (it is big though) so another couple of years i might be able to retire Grin hopfully one day your input will make somebody very happy.

Hello again Celia,

I've just found out that it was up to individual familes, it seems that they were asked if they wanted an 'official' war type headstone. Can you imagine the enormity of organising this kind of exercise?!

I wondered why so many family memorials mentioned sons lost in the wars and yet there were no corresponding 'war' ones. Maybe the families concerned didn't have very much confidence in the 'powers that be' to ever get round to it.

You mentioned the Malta Convoy - which of the armed services was your dad in? My dad, who has only recently passed away was in the Marines, he often mentioned Malta, Rekyavik and Scapa Flow. His ship was HMS 'Anson'.

Hello Hilary, thank you for your P.M. i cannot find you posting anywhere,I have seen them on your posting but cant actually find them, as a few weeks has elapsed since then. I am not sure sure which of my replies you are referring to. I know on one of them i mentioned i had a burial on this topic for Davies the only one. It may not be a connection but you never know, you will find it on page one near the bottom after George.Sorry i missed your reply but we don't always get a "reply has been posted" message. I will P.M you with intructions on how to get to this topic.this one is easy. Please put any replies regarding this topic only on here and not the P.M it's harder to keep tack with those ;)I know it's a bit confusing when you are new, we have all been there Grin
