Hi  Every one,
As far as i know the monumental inscriptions for Merchant Seamen. That i have taken From Rake Lane Cemetery over the last two years. Is the only record available, i seem to have now covered all the M.I available to me.I have made two trips but not found anymore. With 10,000 burials in the cemetery and a lot of  large spaces on the plots in the older part. There must be hundreds more Merchant seamen buried there. The stones maybe fallen and grassed over(any stones grassed over are in good condition)So if you know your ancestor was a merchant seaman and is buried in Rake lane, but i don't have the M.I.It doesn't mean he is not there. I have to say that most of the M.I's are C.O.E or non conformist, with a few only Catholics. The reason there are so few Catholics is because. Some of the plots have big monuments. They are very close together with not much room to maneuver round so a bit bit dangerous for me.These plot's i call the R.C.P (Rich Catholic Plots  Wink)So thats it. If anyone wants to contribute any Merchant seamen (only)M.I's from any council cemetery in the wirral.(see first page)Be my Guest .I cannot take any photo's of these headstones, though somebody else might oblige
(I can always do a look up for missing M.I's)

MERCHANT NAVY DAY 3RD SEPTEMBER EVERY YEAR

Dear Celia
This is the first time I have sent a message and I have registered because I read your messages about maritime burials at Rake Lane. I was distressed to find that the grave of John Henry Peers, my Great-grandfather, had been vandalised. Fortunately I have a photo of it intact and although the missing bit doesn't refer to Capt Peers  after the poem the inscription reads " Also Margaret his beloved wife who was called home 24th July 1830 aged 85 years "Deep in our hearts firm and fast, Live golden memories of the past". Also Margaret their daughter, died 30th December 1972 age 86 years."
I have two other family graves there so hope they are still intact.
Best wishes from Australia

Hello Purple1
Thank you for contacting me, Please do not be upset that the grave was broken. It was not vandalized by humans but by nature, the plot that the grave is on is only small with over hanging trees. So i would imagine takes longer to dry out. At some point in time at least half of the stones fell over. Eventually grass grew over them so preserving them.I remember the Peers Stone well because of the lovely verse on it. Also because last year i passed that plot and saw your family stone.I was sure it hadn't been there before, then i noticed that there were stone's standing at the back that had been dug up and stood up recently. In fact the men were working on the plot while i was taking the inscription from yours. He told me that your stone had probably broken when it fell. The other half was there at the side because i took a photo of it.The man in the cemetery knows i have a topic on rootschat .I do think he reads it,i was in the cemetery earlier this year and your stone was still there. With so many people doing family trees.I have noticed that they are asking for fallen grave stones to be dug up again. Some people  where the is no headstone.Have even put a nice little edging where the grave is and put flowers on it. I am so glad you have a photo of as it was i wish everyone would take photos of family gravestones.
If you would like me to see if the other graves are still intact and you don't have photos.I can find them if you can give me some information

Dear Celia
Thank you for your reassuring message. I jumped to the vandalism conclusion because my other great grandfathers grave, in Hull cemetery, was broken by vandals. The other graves, that I know of, are those of my parents and grandparents who are all in a Kenworthy grave and my Stansfield Grandparents and Aunt and Uncle in another one close by. I don't know the row numbers but could always find them as we used to visit them when I was a little girl. They are in different rows in the same block near the chapel.  I do have photo's of them and as they are in a larger plot so I'll trust they are OK. An aside my Uncle Oswald Stansfield was a groundsman at the cemetery for many years so he could tend the Stansfield grave where he is now buried.
However I could never find the grave of my Great grandmother Amelia Kenworthy who died at 135 Rake Lane on 2nd June 1910
or that of Mabel Hazel and Joseph Rowland Stansfield - infants who died in 1904. I thought they might be in Rake Lane cemetery somewhere Have you come across them?
Thank you for your help

I have recently started going round the Catholic Plots. From which i have allready taken M.I's for M.S.Although some i did not do because the graves are to close together for comfort.
The reason for re-doing these plots is to find the Gravestones of ancestors (non navy)That are definitely buried in the cemetery. That i never found,I never did burial look ups for Catholic (so i could find the plot) because they weren't Catholic Grin
I am however now discoving these people were catholics because i am now finding them.                                                On the Catholic plots there seem to be More R.N. men, than on non Catholic Plots. So I have decided that because i have now run out of M.S Headstones.I will collect R.N ones from all plots that will keep be busy for the next two summers Grin
If you have any M.S or R.N and/or their Family buried in Rake lane and have not found them on the topic.I can always do lookups more so in the winter than summer. So Far no one has claimed any of the M.S's but if they do i will take a photo.I am not sure some will survive winter though.

Hello Alf
I have been asked a couple of times recently,as i have been doing M.N.M.I's for the last three years. and burial lookups + M.I's 18 months i think Huh  for Rake Lane I am still thinking about it Roll Eyes I visit Wishfull thinking often. To be honest the topic and the one for Rake lane both which keep me busy. Now feel like my own websites.People seem to know they are here Besides i like the correspondence. and the personel touch That you dont get in a list of names and no feedback. All of the Merchant Seamen R.N.R. Would i think have been mostly local and based in Liverpool, like my granddad.

While I was on the 1918 newspaper film today (looking for an orbit) I came across lots and lots of write ups, not the personal column, in just one week. Of Missing or lost at sea, merchant seamen. Some of who had their remains buried in Rake lane. So I will probably find many more of the sailors that no longer have a headstone to take M.I from.
These are just two of the many from.Wallasey News
Sat January 5th edition 1918 The write up of the funeral is long so I have abbreviated it. Mr J Hawkins Military Funeral.in Rake lane yesterday (Friday)When the remains of Mr Joseph Hawkins, who was drowned at sea, was laid to rest.

This one was two columns long half the M.N .top men attended this funeral. Very big funeral.
 Saturday March 11th edition 1918
Funeral of Commander A Haughton R.N.R. (Liverpool) President of the Marine Mercantile service association interned at Rake lane on Wednesday
