Monumental Inscriptions Merchant Navy.(Family Graves) Rake Lane cem
« on: Wednesday 29 September 04 13:24 BST (UK) »

I often walk round the large Rake Lane cemetery on nice days in the summer. I have done so for years, both my grandfathers were in the navy. There must be hundreds of sailors headstones there. Unfortuntley a lot would  have fallen and grass has been allowed to grow over them . so will dissapear forever. I started collecting some, i only have about 6 but would get more.So I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in doing the same in thier spare time. Most of us have asked at on time "where did he go" when did he die? He could have been born in Stafford  joined the navy  died in scotland.  What do you think Undecided

Hi Celia,

Good for you my Grandfather was in the Navy too  Smiley

You are doing a great job, and it is so important that someone cares. If you have time take as much information as you can and then we can save it  for everyone to see and everyone then can remember.

Merchant,R.N.R. Cemetary Head stone Inscriptions
« Reply #2 on: Tuesday 05 October 04 12:16 BST (UK) »

Hello RootsChat I have just been looking at my Merchant Navy & R.N.R Headstones Document. I will take me ages to copy it all out on a message (dates and numbers) .Because as well as a crest, as i call it o the top. I have the words, Headstone in blue and Memorials in Purple. I have so much respect for these used to be forgotten men i set it out nice. Is it possible to upload it. I could send the page without the crest to save space then add it later. Next time i go on an Away day i will collect more. Also if i get this up i would like them to have there own page and hopfully in the future it may get added to can i change the topic name Huh Advice please

Celia     Thought i would add this site it' very interesting      http://www.mersey-gateway.org/          Mission Completed

Celia what a lovely idea, I know that if one of them that you mention, or will possibly mention in the future, was 'mine' I would be so pleased to know that someone had taken notice of them and what they had done.
It is rather nice to think that through all this interest in our past, lots of our ancestors are being brought back to life, in the nicest possible way.  I like to think that they would be pleased.

Congrats.

Thank you Lindy i do what i can. I only wish i had thought of  it years ago. Before so many fell flat and became part of the earth, or got vandalized and have now disappeared forever.
