Hereford/leominster/mordiford
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 12:39 GMT (UK) »

Are Hereford/Leominster/Mordiford in the same area of Herefordshire?

I am trying to identify if the William Whiteman that I found on IGI is my relative.

On the 1861 census, his place of birth is Leominster, Hereford. On the 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901, his place of birth is just Hereford.

However, the one on the IGI, his place of christening is Mordiford.

The dates match up, I just need to know where these places are.

Any help appreciated Grin

Try http://www.multimap.com  !  You can enter the name of any place and it will zoom in for you. If you open two separate windows, you can find two places in relation to eachother more easily.

Good luck,
Ger Smiley

PS I have found that sometimes in censuses, they give 'hereford' as birthplace meaning Herefordshire rather than the town of Hereford.

Leominster is in the north of Herefordshire on the A49 road, Mordiford [famous for its red dragon that was painted on its church tower] in south of the river Wye and to the south east of Hereford city on the B4224
Probably 20 miles and the river Wye apart

I use the Routeplanner programme on my computer to track where relatives moved about between, it is very interesting to plot these

Yes, I have found that thanks. I think they are his parents.

The William Whiteman that I definately know is my relative is born c1838.

On IGI I've found a William Whiteman christened 14 Oct 1838 in Mordiford. It would seem that the William christened in Mordiford is the son of William & Catherine BUT I'm not sure he's my relative !

Why can't people remember where they were born for the census's??!!
