« on: Thursday 23 February 06 18:45 GMT (UK) »

Searching for ROBERT THOMAS GIBBONS, b.1887 Liverpool UK.
Robert was a Saddler and apparently emigrated around 1912.
He may or may not have been married at the time of emigration.
i would appreciate any help, guidance, information.

Ship lists into Canada are not indexed, except for 1925-1935.  Guides to most topics can be found at www.collectionscanada.ca

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010602_e.html - no Robert Thomas Gibbons and no Robert Gibbons b. 1887 registered for WWI.

Most sources will require you to know where in Canada Robert went, since things are (broadly) sorted by province.

jorose,

thank you for the information, that has helped to point me in the right direction.

thank you also for checking ww1,  i had wondered about that.

i remember viewing an American site sometime ago, that showed the likely areas that imigrants with particular surnames settled.  would you know, is there such a site for Canada?

Hello, the message below may be your own, but I doubt it as this person has Roberts death being in the USA. Perhaps that is where you should be looking. This is where I found the posting.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=132638.0;num_replies=2

searching for information relating to robert thomas gibbons b.1887 liverpool uk. and his family. i believe that robert emigrated to the states between 1914 and 1930. his occupation was a saddler. he may have married an AMY (surname unknown) and had two children GORDON and DOROTHY.

i have noted a GORDON ROBERT GIBBONS d.new york 1955. this may or may not be roberts son, i should like to try and establish if it was. also, try establish the whereabouts of the family.

Could this be your Roberts son?

Hello Shash,

The following post is mine,   'searching for information relating to robert thomas gibbons b.1887 liverpool uk. and his family. i believe that robert emigrated to the states between 1914 and 1930. his occupation was a saddler. he may have married an AMY (surname unknown) and had two children GORDON and DOROTHY'.

at the time of posting i was fairly confident that robert had emigrated to america.  now after Jorose and Genealiza have searched census and emigration records i am no longer confident.

the information relating to roberts possible family, is sketchy, i cannot find any record of a marriage, in the states, canada or the uk.

regarding robert thomas b. 9 feb. 1918 i suppose it is possible that he is my roberts son.  is there any way that one can establish the names of the parents, their country of origin and dates of birth?

The Canadian and American records are not as readily available and 'free' as the ones in England and I suppose that this would be because most of our anscestors originated in England. (Britian)
I will try and see if there are any volunteers that will do free look ups and send them on to you.

In the meantime, don't give up. You won't if you love genealogy! Smiley

I found Robert Gibbons' entering the USA via the port of Ellis Island between the dates that you state in your posting. Want me to send them to you?

hi J.J.

This link, http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-130-e.html, did in fact send me on the right route and thanks to other rootchatters i was able to track Robert and Amy to Winnipeg.  I have now ordered Roberts death certificate from Manitoba Vital Statistics Office and am presently awaiting delivery of same, 12 weeks wait can you believe!

The Robert Gibbons who died in Texas 1972 is definitely not my man.

Many thanks for all the various members help.
