My ancester Louisa Montgomery was born in Brittany of a French Mother L(O)uisa Montgomery and an English Father John Douglas Montgomery who was a commisserie in the Army (I think this was some kind of pay clerk) around 1815. They moved to England before 1825.
This is all I know about her, I don't know where to start enquiring in France. I am unable to go there, so it would have to be done by letter, phone or email. I have tried Army records for John, also Hugonot records, but had no luck.
I would appreciate any help on this.

Have you looked in the overseas section of the General Registry Office. Though civil registration in this country did not begin until 1837 army births were recorded earlier (really army baptisms).

Thanks for the suggeston Velda. I have just tried it, but no luck though.
Logic says that it should have been there, but I have found a possible brother (very tenuous) I will follow up on.
Perhaps he was a civilian working for the army and records were not recorded for them?

If she was not baptised by the army chaplain, but locally she will not be in the GRO index.
You might want to try her father's army records at The National Archives instead.
I cannot see a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will for John Douglas Montgomery. There is one for a John Montgomery who was a pay clerk in the British army but he had died by 1820 so I presume this was to early for your John Montgomery and besides he died in Ireland?
Which regiment was Louisa's father in?

I don't know what regiment he was in or whether he came from Ireland or Scotland, I only got the information about being a commisserie in the army from Louisa's marriage certificate. She married in 1839 and gave her Father's name and occupation, but in a very old French prayer book I have, she has written it was the gift of her Father who died in 1825.
I think it may be worth my checking the John Montgomery's will as it is a coincidence he was also a pay clerk.

I think since he has no middle name and his death must be pre or 1820 it is unlikely to be him
Will of John Montgomery, Paymaster of His Majesty's Fiftieth Regiment of Foot of Londonderry , Londonderry 01 March 1820 PROB 11/1627
Since you know a death date have you tried WO 42
1755-1908 Application papers for widow's pensions and dependants' allowances fo army officers. You had to be in genuine need to receive a pension but applicants when applying had to furnish proofs of birth, marriage, death and wills (for widows and dependents of commissariat officers 1814-1834 try WO 61/96-98)
An authentic baptismal certificate was mandatory for those in government service - army officers is contained in
WO 32/8903-8920 (21A) for 1777-1868
and WO 42
for 1755-1908 which also contains certificates of marriage, birth of children, death and burial.
Indexes for both are I believe available in the Research Enquiries Room.
The Commissariat Department was responsible for the victualling of the army and was set up in 1793. Commissary officers were normally civilians but were subject to military discipline and wore uniform. Registers in WO 61/1-16 cover the apppointment of men to the department between 1798-1889

I had only tried the army records at Kew. I will now try the ones you suggested, I didn't realise they had the others, thanks. This has given me new hope.
When you say the Indexes are available in the Research Enquiries Room, is this at Kew?
I really appreciate your help.
