Cedars Villas, Hampton Wick
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 23:31 GMT (UK) »

I have just joined RootsChat, so I hope I am posting this message in the right place.  I am trying to find out who the first family to live in 12 Cedars Villas were in Hampton Wick.  I know the Rudyard family lived there in 1901 but I am interested to find out if there were any other families before them.  I don't believe the house was built in 1891.
Many thanks

Hi Lorryloo & welcome to Rootschat Smiley

You could try having a look at this site  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Do you have details of this Rudyard family in 1901 - a reference number perhaps?  From that it might be possible to find 12 Cedar Villas in 1891.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.  I am quite new to all this, so I really appreciate your suggestion which I will give a try, I think I can get a ref no for the family who lived there in 1901 from the census?

Do you have a subscription to Ancestry.com? or any other access to previous census?  If you don't, just give me the details of this Rudyard family & I'll TRY & check the 1891.  It doesn't have an address index so it's a question of finding the district in 1901 & going through the pages in 1891.  Don't forget, addresses changed (street names, numbers etc) quite a lot so it might be there but under a different guise.  I've found that locating an address in modern times, on a modern map, then comparing the area with the image from Old Maps gives a pretty good idea of development.

Hello Jane

I had a look at the map but couldn't make anything out on it!  I paid to look at census returns and 12 Cedars villas in 1901 was occupied by Letitia M Rudeyard, her 3 adult children and a servant(sometimes spelt Rudeyerd).  In 1891 she lived in Kent.  I am interested to know if she was the first occupant.   The address has changed as you say it might have done, but we have a map (no date,c1900) and then it was Cedars Villas, however I only got information up when I put in Hampton Wick and nothing else. Thanks ever so much for your help.

Here are a few sites that might further your search.

http://www.visitrichmond.co.uk/Guide/History.htm

http://www.twickenham-museum.org.uk/research.asp

There is a 'Hampton Wick Historian' on Curious Fox but you have to be a member to contact him.

Twickenham Museum has a good page on Hampton Wick & they might be able to put you in touch with someone  Smiley

Hi Jane

Thanks for all that info.  I actually went to Richmond this afternoon and found out quite a lot about the house.  Its very probable the Rudeyard family were the first occupants but I have a bit more research to do.
I'll look up curious fox, sounds intriguing and I am very grateful for all your help.
