Canada Copyright views of Rootschat
« on: Friday 24 February 06 01:10 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone
Some folks have asked why their posts were deleted, this is the Rootschat Admin. Response.

Basically it is OK to transcribe what you read, but not to copy and paste directly.

"The information contained on the site is in the public domain.  However, the information that was posted was a straight copy and paste from the index/database.  At RootsChat we tend to err on the side of caution and treat all online indexes and databases as subject to copyright and we delete any posts which look as if they come from such a source.  There is nothing to stop anyone transcribing the information in the index/database themselves and posting it.

Both posts contained information from the census and were set out in a very standardised format and no acknowledgement of its exact source was given.  Therefore it was considered likely that the source may be subject to copyright and the messages were deleted.

With the high volume of messages appearing on RootsChat every day, it is not possible for the moderators to seek out the source of material where none is acknowledged.  If it looks as if it comes from a database/index, it is therefore likely to be deleted.  RootsChat aims to work within existing copyright laws, but it is difficult for anyone to be an expert on copyright law as it exists in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.  Therefore we have adopted the approach described above.

The co-operation of all our members in this area is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes
The RootsChat Team"

We hope this answers questions on this matter.
