Hello Christopher.  I wondered if you could point me in the direction of any other links which would show the names of emigrants to Australia from Plymouth.  One of my ancestors Francis Raymond emigrated to Australia in the mid to late 1850s and I would love to find out more information.

Any help you could give would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Did Francis Raymond leave Ireland and sail to Australia from Plymouth or was he from England Huh

Canny Huh What is that when you are at home Huh
Do you mean Canasta Huh Now that is a good game. Do you play the conventional two pack version or a three pack version Huh I forget what they call it with three packs.

Hello Christopher.  My relatives were from Devon and Cornwall and I have found one in Australia. Sa.  Working in the copper mines.  A lot of Cornishmen emigrated to work in the copper mines of Australia.  Similarly a large number of familes from Devon and Cornwall travelled north to Co. Durham.

"Canny" is a north-east term (I shall not say Gordie because I dont class myself as a Gordie, coming from south of Sunderland).  Difficult to explain what it means really - suppose another way of saying it would be I'm off to play nicely, or with enjoyment.  A young man or woman could be classed as a canny lad or a canny lass, meaning - nice or a pleasure to know.

Now you know just another piece of useless information.

Sorry Linda,

The old grey matter must have been the off mode, relaxing or thinking of other matters when I read your message. My background is Ulster with possible Scottish connections so I have known the meaning of canny for many years.
My interpretation would be a clever but cautious person. One who does not rush into situations without some prior thought.
