Hi, tess

Searching for an Armstrong in the Hexham/Hexhamshire area is like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially if they were called John, Thomas, William, Elizabeth, Mary or Ann. (My Armstrong's came from Hexham in the 1700's)

It is said that there were more Armstrong's in Hexham/Hexhamshire than anywhere else in the country.

Before the late 1700's, anyone who's family were/had been border reivers, related to, or associated with a known family, were not allowed into any of the main City's. They could only live in the main Towns if they had to have a place to live, lodge and a certificate of guarantee signed by someone within the Town to say that you were of good behavior and would not cause trouble.

You can track the Armstrong's from the early 1600's making their way from the borders in the west, (Cumberland) towards the East, along Allendale, Haltwhistle, Haydon Bridge, To Hexham. It was not until the late 1770's that they started to (were allowed to) move into Newcastle and the main City's.

Back to your's.

Searching the IGI I have found the following:-

You searched for:     Armstrong, Northumberland, England, British Isles
Father: Robert Armstrong
Exact Spelling: Off
Batch Number: P000642

Children of Robert Armstrong
None of them had a mothers name which is unusual.
