Will sks please point me in the direction of help for making your own website? I've got free space allocated from Rootschat - so I'm looking for an idiot's guide to first steps and beyond! I know there's something but I can't see it today...

Many thanks

Hi Jan,

try these two:

Topic: TOPICS: Help with building your website.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html

and

Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.0.html

plus any other topic on the "Free RootsChat Webspace" board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,292.0.html

and any time you are stuck, then come back and ask again.
Plenty of people here, ready to help  Smiley Smiley

Good luck,

Thanks Bob

Well, I decided to use Family tree maker ... so now I have an FTM website .... but I'm not sure that's what I want, as MyTrees can use the info if they wish.

There didn't seem to be a facility to direct toward another webspace - or perhaps it just passed me by! What would you recommend?

Are you wanting to make your own website? Some family tree programs like Rootsmagic, Legacy and FTM can all make webpages, but you dont control the layout.

If you want to control the layout you'll need HTML software like Front page or Dreamweaver.

I personally have used Dreamweaver for a long time and I love it. My website is all hand-made by me. Smiley

Check it out. The link is in my signature.

Good advice from Burrow Digger.

I used NetObjects Fusion 7 - which is HTML software.  I got it off a magazine coverdisc last summer.  I noticed in WH Smith's the other day that one of the current web Design mags is offering it on their cover disc.  Great advantage is that after an hour or so getting the hang of it, you are away!  Downside is you can't just load your gedcom file into it.
