Hi,
I have found the marriage certificate of my ancestor, Thomas Bridgewater, b. c. 1823 in Stoke, Shropshire. I already have info on him for the 1861, 1871, 1881, etc. censuses.
According to the marriage certificate, his mother's name is Hannah Bridgewater. He was illegitimate! Could someone please see if they appear in the 1841 census or IGI?
Does anyone have any advice for finding likely candidates for the paternity of illegitimate children in genealogical research? How can I find clues as to who the father might be?
Thanks,
Nicholas J. Bridgewater

Thank you very much Frances.
I hope that they may also be found in the 1841 census.
Would someone please be able to check?
Thanks,

WILLIAM BRIDGEWATER Christening: 02 MAR 1828 Stoke Saint Milborough, Shropshire Mother: HANNAH BRIDGEWATER
You need to check with Shropshire record office to see whether a 'Bastardy Order' was made and has survived for either of the children.
A possible baptism for Hannah (but you would need to check against censuses)
HANNAH BRIDGWATERS Christening: 13 AUG 1806 Stoke Saint Milborough, Shropshire Father: EDWARD BRIDGWATERS Mother: ELIZABETH

Hi Valda,
Thanks. This really helps. If she had two illegitimate children, it might be easier to find the father, as he may have been a steady partner.
What is the legal purpose of a bastardy order?
I hope she can be found in 1841 as this might lead to some further clues. She might even appear with the father.
Many thanks,
Nicholas

If the parish had pushed Hannah to obtaining a Bastardy order or orders, or were obtaining such an order on her behalf then you wont find the father (or fathers) living with her. It was basically the equivalent of a maintenance order. The parish would be very keen to get Hannah to claim maintenance so the upkeep of the children did not fall onto the local ratepayers. In small parishes people didn't ususally live together.

Valda

I got the following reply from the Shropshire Records Office:
Shropshire Archives Castle Gates, Shrewsbury, SY1 2AQ, England www.shropshirearchives.co.uk
Please reply to: archives@shropshire-cc.gov.uk

Dear Mr. Bridgewater, Thank you for your e-mail concerning the above. I am afraid that for the majority of parishes in Shropshire no bastardy orders have survived and none have survived for Stoke St. Milborough.Occasionally in the case of a dispute reference is made in the Quarter Sessions orders but there is nothing relevant in the Quarter Sessions orders 1823-8. In many cases no order was made at all.
I am sorry we cannot be of help. Yours sincerely, Alison Healey (Mrs.) Researcher
