???I am looking for a record of Samuel Griffiths' birth. He was born in Chester according to most of the census returns. The estimated birth year varies from 1811-1816. The 1871 census gives his birthplace as Thornton,Cheshire.
He married Hannah Bunnell in Liverpool in 1832.
Any help would be gratefully received as I am having great difficulty with this.
Thank you Erika

Hi again Erika. That was easy, but then you might have seen them? There are only two Samuels born Chester in Cheshire. One was born 11th August 1810 and christened the 11th September the same year. His parents were William and Ann Griffith. The other one there is no birth date but was christened 1816 in the same church in August the parents were John & Mary Griffith. The other two were C 1812 in Thornton Le-Moors and 1816 in Tarvin

I am thinking he is the one that was born in Thornton as on the 1871 census he gives his birthplace as Thornton. Other census say Chester, but they seem to have moved about a bit. What I really would like to find out are who his parents were. Sometime ago I had a search of Thornton baptisms done and a Samuel Griffith (no S) was baptised on 16 March 1816 the son of John and Martha Griffith. I have never been able to find out anymore about this.
Recently on the IGI I found the christening of an Anne Griffith on 23 Aug 1801 in Barrow Cheshire, also the daughter of John and Martha. Could she be his sister and where is Barrow?
So these are my dilemmas!!

Thank you Erika As I said my Geography isn't all that good, but i have now looked up Barrow and it's in Cumbria. According to what i have read.Is now a Shipping port. Thornton Lee Moors is in Chester an ancient parish. Not many people lived there when your ancestors did.(if they are yours) The Samuel that was C There on the 9th August 1812. His parents were John Griffith and Martha This had a batch number so I did a wider sweep 1812 <5> and came up with another child of John & Martha. George Griffith C 22nd May in 1810. Thornton Lee Moor. I then did ten years, but nothing more came up so presumably they were on the move. So it looks like this couple lived in Barrow in Furness which is a lot further up north then moved to chester What was Samuels occupation. There is a big gap though between 1801 and 1812. I was going to suggest you ask for the 1841 census for Barrow so you could confirm what we have both found, but he would be married by then. I will do another search on the I.G.I this time in Cumbria
P.S if i have given the wrong geographical mapping please correct me anyone P.S. I correct myself,Have just re-read your post and you say Barrow in Chesire so forget that bit

Hi Erika Sorry about the above confusion,i am most embarrassesd:-X i will keep a location zipped in future unless i definitely know where it is;D Anyway i have been trying to make up for that. I did do a wide search in Cheshire, but i keep coming up with the same two in the Chester area. Samuel and George plus the one you found in 1801.The only other two children i found, Parents John Griffith & Martha. was one in London and one in Liverpool, But they could be anyone. So i will leave you with That, and your extra child.

Hi Celia
Thank you for all you've discovered. Will try to sort it out!!!
I have an index to the census- Cheshire place names and have found in there a place called Barrow (Great), so somewhere it does exist. Probably swallowed up by now. I will get a check for the 1841 census and see what it comes up with.
Best wishes Erika
