Boyce - emigrated to Canada
« on: Friday 24 February 06 21:01 GMT (UK) »

I'm trying to research my family who moved to Canada between 1911 - 1913 I think. Their names were Edward and Hilda Boyce.  They moved I think from Long Eaton, Derbyshire and returned back to the UK approximately 10 years later.  They had 3 children George, Walter and Ernie.
Can anyone help me please ?

Sorry Josephine, I don't know what province.

I only know that they went to Canada then came back - the children came back by themselves because Edward and Hilda split up. Then Edward came back to England. I'm not too sure if Hilda stayed in Canada or came back to England. The children came back by themselves - they weren't very old - all under 14 I think - we wouldn't let our children travel like that today would we !!

It could be a hard problem to solve !!

Geoff,

Have you checked the ongoing transcription of the 1911 census at Automated Genealogy:
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Could the father have served in the First World War?
Canadian government database on Soldiers of the First World War:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020106_e.html

Canada GenWeb:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/html/e-index.html

The ideal situation would be if they arrived in time for the 1911 census, so you could find out where they lived.  Then you could search for records in that area, including a possible divorce, if that's what happened.

Do you have dates of birth for them all?  Perhaps if you post that info, someone else might have some good ideas.

Good luck!

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/008/022008-100.01-e.php well, they're not listed here (Divorce in Canada database).

I think he did serve in WWI - there's an Edward Boyce listed in St. Thomas, Ontario, wife Hilda.

http://stthomascemetery.com/genealogy.htm - could try and find out about the burial of Douglas.

http://www.elginogs.ca/ - has various transcriptions

http://www.elginogs.ca/newsindexes/timesjournal/sttj1917maythruaug.htm - 30 Aug 1917 mentions:
Died -   Donald Archibald Boyce, 7 months, Aug 30, son of Edward Boyce
More newspapers of that timeframe will be indexed and brought online gradually.

Thanks everybody for your help.

On the grave of Hilda Downs father a Donald Boyce is mentioned, we never knew who he was and when he died.

So its good to know a bit more about him, even though its sad.

Does anyone know which regiment Edward Boyce served in ?

Regards

You can order his military records and get all kinds of information from them.  They can be quite detailed.

Thanks, I've printed off his WW1 details from the website.
Is the 1911 Canadian census out yet ? My mum thinks that Edward + Hilda travelled round a bit, so it would be interesting to see if they left St Thomas Ontario and moved elsewhere.

See http://allcensusrecords.com/ and click on the CENSUS COMPARISON CHART for CANADA, then scroll to 1911 for a list of sites that are indexing it.
