« on: Friday 24 February 06 23:10 GMT (UK) »

Hi

Please does anyone have any info re burials at Cheltenham St Mary's in 1767? I've been researching Prestbury St Mary's and may have been in the wrong place!

Thank you

Hi Annie,

Cheltenham St. Mary's doesn't appear on the NBI.

Gloucester Record Office only has registers 1558-1745.

Not much help  Sad

Thanks for the info Susan, it was helpful as I now know that a trip to the GRO to consult burial records is probably a waste of time.

I shall have to think of another way to approach this - what I'm ultimately trying to do is identify a family name for a guy I know only as Mr M by researching his mothers family, and all I know about them is that by 1801 they're all buried in what I now believe to be the churchyard of St Mary's Cheltenham, including his uncle who died in 1767. Maybe there's something in Bigland. Or maybe I should just give up?  Huh

Hi Annie,

Will be in the GRO and probably Glos.FHS sometime next week, shall I have a look at Bigland and pick out names at St. Mary's? Of course, St. Mary's may not be recorded!  Shouldn't take too long  Roll Eyes

Gloucestershire Family History Society are holding their annual Family History Fair on Saturday 22nd April 2006, 10.00 am to 4 pm. lots of other society's taking part and Gloucester Record Office.

St. Mary's is recorded pages 314-316 (only two pages Huh). Volume covers 1750-1781 lets hope Ralph Bigland was in Cheltenham after 1767!

Hi Susan

Ooh, yes pleaseeeeee  Grin

Re. lets hope Ralph Bigland was in Cheltenham after 1767

He probably was - he recorded Prestbury burials for that year.

My guy describes his mother's family as 'entombed' so I may be looking for something more substantial than a simple headstone for his uncle - but it's in the churchyard and not a plaque in the church, that's quite clear. It also reads as though others of his family, presumably of the same name (?), were buried in the churchyard prior to 1767, so if mulitples of any names turn up in Bigland a record of those would be v. helpful too.

Your help is much appreciated, truly - I am determined to crack this but the sheer number of deadends I'm encountering is beginning to get me down. And for me the GRO is a 3 hour drive away.

Hello Susan,

Me again. I was just on the phone to the GRO re. something else but I asked about burial records for Cheltenham St Mary's and was told that they do hold registers for 1767.

If you did have time to look up male burials for 1767 I would be sooo grateful, although I do feel cheeky asking. No doubt you've got more than enough of your own research to do.

I will be making the trek to the GRO myself sometime in April, so maybe I could return the favour then.
