A date for Florence??
« on: Friday 24 February 06 23:13 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

I wonder if anyone could have an educated stab at dating this for me?? I have two Florrie candidates on the side of the family tree that this picture came from, one born 1875 (the girl in the picture is too young I think) and one born 1895. The latter would have been a sister of my great grandmother Evelyn b.1903 and is perhaps a better bet. I'm guessing the picture was taken around the 1910-18 mark? Don't you think the get-up is a bit Russian revolutionary?  Smiley

From what I've read, making postcards from photos was not unusual??

All input gratefully received  Smiley Smiley

Hi Gougy

I would guess 1915.  She is actually smiling and looks as though she hasn't had to hold the pose for long minutes as they had to do in older photographs.

I like her rig-out. she looks quite well off with legwarmers , muff and fur collar. Just the kind of gear for being driven along in a horsedrawn coach or omnibus. The braided hat-band puts me in mind of an early 1900s photo I have. A fore-runner of the cloche hats of the 1920s.

I have several postcards of relatives both from here in Scotland and from the States. Studios would do that for you as a routine part of their business.

A good site for info on photography is edinphoto.org.uk   You'll get a full history of professional photography in Edinburgh there. Beware though,  It will distract you from your family history search for quite a while!
