1861 Census - the missing gt gt grandfather
« on: Saturday 25 February 06 03:45 GMT (UK) »

I am on a search for my gt grandfather's father. Family history said there was'nt one but I have now obtained my gt grandfathers marriage certificate and a father is listed there so now I want to know more (as one does in these circumstances).

Gt grandfather William Brown was born about 1862 in White Notley and mother is Eliza Brown. She never married and in all the census since 1851 she has been living either with her parents or her brother, also called William Brown. The marriage certificate dated 1892 shows the father of the bridegroom as Peter Gowers, occupation Groom. I found a Peter in the 1881 census age 58 born 1823 Gt Waltham Essex, listed as Horseman so could be the same but of course married.

Could someone look for Peter Gowers born 1823, in the 1861 and if possible 1871 census to see where he was living at that time.  Family history said that Eliza got pregnant to someone at the Big House in White Notley,  so could well have been the groom rather than the Lord. There was obviously an ongoing affair as she had another child, Emma in 1867. I will now have to get Emma's details to see if she had the same father  ??

Strangely enough, William Brown is shown as PEter in the 1881 census and evidently was often called Peter by the family - also on his gravestone to Peter Gowers looks a likely candidate for the missing gt gt grandfather.

Hi 2shea,

This Peter is in Chelmsford on both 1861 (Cottages Natham?) and 1871 (South Wood) - married to Emma with quite a few children. Occupation Ag lab.

I can also see another Peter Gowers, born ca. 1838 at Little Leighs.
1901 has him a groom and stockman on Farm. RG13/1673 83 4.
1891: Groom at Little Leighs - wife Ellen and children RG12/1388 89 11
1871: Ag lab at little Leighs RG10/1665 108 5. Married to Ellen with a daughter Emma b. 1869
1861: Ag lab, unm, at Little Leighs with parents James and Elizabeth RG9/1081 103 14

Thank you.  Two Peter's now really confuses the scene but still in the right area.

Thanks
