                    My gggrandfather was called Walter Roper he got married to Sarah Jane Wilson

          in Belfast 1896 has any one heard of the name Roper or were it comes from

I don't remember ever hearing the name Roper in Belfast. However I just come across this little gem

It does mention that the name could apply to people who made ropes & ropemaking is one of the old industries of Belfast...

                   Thankyou Terry I will have a look may be he came over from England.When my grandfather was born they were living in Nelson street which is at the docks he could have worked on the boats

Roper, Chas, joiner Crystal St.

Roper Samuel, Hackler, 59 Crmbria St.

Roper H,W, Warehouseman Gordon Villa Balmoral Ave

There is not a lot off names for Roper in Belfast.

  Samuel Roper 59 Crimbria street was my gggrandfather

I went on to Ulster Historical Foundation got Walter Roper marriage records.  Samuel roper and Ann Jane Roper his parents had elven children Samuel born 1860  Ann born 1865  Thomas born 1867 David born 1866 then they moved to England were seven more children were born including Walter 1876   They moved back to Belfast some time between 1881 and 1993  if anyone could check street directory's for these dates (59 Crimbria street) or know were this is

Hi Jem i think that is supposed to be Cambria Street its of the Shankill road./Crumlin Road.

Hi Jemmifer. Samuel was there in 1896, only one Roper in Belfast in 1884, Moses Roper Merchant Tailor 9 Landscape Terrace.

www.belfastfamilyhistory.com found Samuel Roper at the address you had given me also found two more children there date of birth means they would have to have left England in 1881 as they were born in Belfast  my be they shared a house with anther family
                             I found Ann Jane Roper ( Samuel Ropers wife ) Maiden name McGrath place of birth Co Down have to check this out
