If I take a load of bmd index numbers to the records office can I look up the info that is on these pages of the index.
I have never been to the records office so I want to make sure I dont have a wasted visit by making sure I have everything organised before I go.

Anna,

The GRO index references refer to the centralised records, not those kept at local registry offices (different from county records offices).  And I'm afraid that the certificates are NOT available for public examination - which is why we have to pay for the certificates!  The only way to see the information which you would find on e.g. a marriage certificate is to know which church the couple married in and look at the PARISH record at the county record office.  Parish baptism records may not always show the birth date or the mother's maiden name and burial records do not show the cause of death or the date of death.

In other words, no you cannot.

That is good to know - it will save me hours of listing all the indexes I have.
Luckily there was a family church so I hope I can find the parish records of it at the records office

Many thanks

Anna

One thing I have learnt is take all your info with you, don't rely on your memory and take details of family beyond the person you want to investigate (if you get my drift).  That way as you start down a path you don't have to stop early because you don't know where you are!

If you find all the info you want you can then carry on with others if time allows instead of having to go home early.
