My Grandparents and Great-Grandparents

Foreign Ancestors
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 12:56 UTC (UK) »

I think i may have found the first foreigner in my family. I need the cert to confirm but on the census it says they are from Poland, which makes a change from St Pancras, London.

The one thing that puzzles me is his name is Harris Lewis and his wife's name is Betsy Lewis and their oldest Daughter is Leana. Harris and Betsy don't sound Polish neither does Lewis. I suppose they may have just anglicized their original names.

I think it was common for people to anglicize their names. My friends grandfather changed his name from Bernitz to Burton when he came to Britain from Lithuania. Your chap was probably called Harris Lewczwichz or some such Polish looking name originally.

Hi

check out the first two posts on
Topic:  Sharing Useful Tips: GERMANY & E. Europe
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,11860.15.html

they are about possible name changes.

There are also other topics on the immigrants board dealing with polish ancestors and their possible name changes, and where to search etc

I've changed some of the titles to include "POLAND: ..." as the first word (see "alphabetic sorting")

Good luck,
Bob
