Why do we let this happen
« on: Thursday 30 September 04 14:56 BST (UK) »

Hi Fellow Family Historians.

Why do we let this happen ?

Today I was able to gain admission to the tower of the Old St Helens Church in Ore, Sussex, (thanks to some vandals cutting a hole in the fence, and pulling the tower door of its hinges) which is a listed building that is open to the elements.

How many generations of our ancestors have stood proudly in front of this font (on the left) to have their children baptized - and now look at it !!!! A toilet for the pigeons.

It shames me to think that we are letting our ancestors down by allowing such things to happen to what was once a beautiful building and church.

I am truly saddened

Chris in 1066Land

PS - The bottom picture is a sketch of c.1810 showing how it did once look

Yes its a shame Chris , These should be looked after before they are gone and when people take notice it will be to late to save them !!

Hi Chris
I quite agree with everything you said - many members of my family must have been baptised in that very font. Whilst the condition is very saddening, it is still good to me to be able to see a photograph of that spot.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, but no doubt this is only one of thousands of places in this condition, listed buildings or not.
