I came across this - if it needs to be moved Deadants please do! - but even I got interested in this !! Perhaps this will give you an idea of what a travelling photographer used to do !!

Hi Annie,
  It was one way of getting to see the country and paying your way. I guess the modern day equivalent would be the freelance photographer.
