Why would my Herts ancestor have visited Rockport, Illinois?
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 21:42 GMT (UK) »

My great grandfather worked for John Dickinson & Co at Croxley as chief cashier abt 1885 to 1920ish.  Inside his pocket watch is a repair slip with his name and Rockport, Illinois on it.   I don't think he went there on holiday - I'm sure we would know about that!  Does anybody know of any links with the company and Illinois?  I have looked in 'The Endless Web' by Joan Evans to no avail.

Many thanks

Hi Salvia,  Warm welcome to Rootschat.
I put John Dickinson Croxley into search engine. It came back with some interesting info on the invention of paper making and  shows the expansion of the company.
Although Jonh Dickinson died in 1869, the company went Ltd.
Then went to other countries.  Calcutta, Cape Town and Australia, at first.
I didn't find a mention of going "West" untill early 1920's.
I wonder, then if your "rellie" tried to introduce the company to the states. Going there on a business trip... perhaps..
                                                  Have fun   Cheesy   Lesanne.

Hi Lesanne,

Thank you for looking, I guess he probably went on business.  I shall have to find some Dickinsons records.

Hi Salvia

Have you tried looking on Ellis Island records to see if Gt Grandad entered the US via New York 1892 to 1924?

http://www.ellisisland.org/default.asp

There is also this site for earlier arrivals, though not as informative if you do find a match.
