« on: Sunday 26 February 06 14:01 GMT (UK) »

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything of the Jolly Sailor in Kings Walden! in 1871 James Waight was beer house keeper in Frogmore and in 1881 his wife sarah was Publican of what i thnik says the jolly sailor, Frogmore/fogmore!  But i cant find any record of a Jolly Sailor in the area :S

Hi Sarcy

I have checked Hertfordshire Inns & Public Houses an historical gazetteer, by Graham Joliffe & Arthur Jones.  Published by Hertfordshire Publications.  ISBN 0-901354-79-1.  This book records all Herts pubs which were open in 1900 and still open in the 1990's, but there was no mention of the Jolly Sailor at Kings Walden.

This would indicate that the pub closed between 1900 and 1990, or before 1900.

Sorry

"The 1881 census list a number of labourer's households at Fogmore and Fogmore End - served by two public houses, The Fox and The Jolly Sailor."
